I got semi-final tickets for me and sons this morning.
Talking to my Dad this evening he mentioned a school teacher who was a Blackpool fan who had taken a few pupils to watch Blackpool play at Goodison Park.
Sounded odd, so I checked Wikipedia and it turns out he was at the 1951 FA Cup semi-final replay between Birmingham and Blackpool. Blackpool won 2-1 but lost 2-0 to Newcastle in the final. Same team though that went on to win the ‘Matthews’ final 2 years later, so he saw Matthews and Mortensen play. 65,000 there. There’s Pathe News footage online.

Thats a nice memory to have from the days when football was cheap to watch and people with no interest in a team would go to watch games played on a neutral ground.
The 1953 cup final was dubbed the Mathews Final, but Stan Mortensen the centre forward for Blackpool scored a hat trick.
I once read an interviews with Mortensen who when asked about Mathews said that the great thing about his was that when he crossed for Mortensen ne always made sur that the lace in the ball was the opposite side from Mortensen's head, so it wouldnt hurt him.
