Are there anymore dale fans going to be out and about at the Boxing Day text in Melbourne?

I assume you are... we are taking a Dale flag so hopefully on the third/fourth day when the Aussies have totally obliterated us, we're hoping we get spotted.

Melbourne tips

The tram system is cheap and easy to use to get around the place

The Barmy Army HQ will be an Irish bar called PJ O'Briens in Southbank, a short walk from the MCG. Useful for getting your BA tat if you want it, shirts etc.

You will be able to watch tennis players prepare for the Australain Open on the outer practice courts as you walk towards the MCG.

Food wise, shopping food courts are cheap, for simple stuff, the casino does good food too. Loads of restaurants, download Tripadvisor (didn't exist when I went)

The beer in the ground will be lite and expensive, because the locals get rowdy off 2 pints of normal stuff. A lunchtime exit is not the worst idea.

Have a great trip all.

Poll: DF in or out

Further tips on Sydney from my experience for those travelling as requested by text.

P.S. Stranglers and dezzy were there too so hopefully can add further tips.

Sydney is all about New Years Eve. We were advised that the clubs would be packed and you would pay through the nose so opted for a night on a static boat in the harbour with food and as muc hbooze as you could drink for about £100.

Alternately, you could go for the Barmy Army planned event, details below.

http://www.barmyarmy.com/tours/index.php?m=viewsection&iSectionID=75

Alternatively you can do what the locals who aint rich do, and that's head to an area called The Rocks, millions of people do it to get a view of the fireworks.

The fireworks are set off from pontoons all over the harbour so if you can somehow get a spot where you can see the bridge, you should have a spectacular night!

Whatever you do, try and decide before NY Eve what you are doing. We didn't but got lucky as we wandered aimlessly around.

Fireworks are set off twice, once at 21:00 for the kiddies and the big one at 24:00

Beware of pick pockets we were told, but never had any trouble.

The more 'interesting' area of Sydney is called Kings Cross but I wouldn't expect any upstanding Dale fans to go there.

If you fancy a trip to Bondai Beach then possibly do it on NY Day. The BA play a game against The Fanatics at a ground near there, a place called Coogie Beech which is the next bay up to Bondai and far nicer in my view.

Worth following the BA on twitter to keep up to date with any events you might fancy ligging. I will say straight away that they are not a charitable case and sell their tat, organise events etc for profit but they are a good laugh and decent people.

Eat a hamburger with beetroot on it, awesome food of the gods when you have a hangover.

Go out on one of the speedboats that do 720 spins and splash you

Do the bridge walk of you are ok with heights, not my cup of tea.

Don't eat alligator pizza, distgusting.

Get the ferry across to Manly from Circular if you fancy a day on a beach. The route also gives you cracknig views of the Opera House and Bridge and is cheap from memory.

Slip Slap Slop with the sun-cream, they don't have an ozone layer down there.

My one regret is that I didn't do a trip to a zoo to see the wonderful wildlife they have there. We did the Melbourne aquarium which was decent if you like that sort of thing.

Thanks, Lama. The Barmy Army HQ is indeed PJ O'Briens, so I predict we'll be in there soaking up the benefits of drinks offers etc.

We're at the casino for the Barmy Army Xmas Dinner. I don't envisage us looking for michelin starred eateries so I'm sure we'll have plenty to go at. I don't know how much KFC had paid for their sponsorship for this series but I'm sure its paying dividends, I can't wait to get my hands on some Sweet Sesame chicken at $2 a pop!

I've got a shit load of Melbourne apps installed on my phone, but I did the same in SA and hardly used them and went with the flow :)

Kinell, I'm gonna C&P that onto Trip Advisor and pass it off as my own. Good stuff.

We're all sorted for NYE thankfully. We went a bit mad and booked on a 'cruise' in Sydney Harbour that takes in both firework displays. Food & Drink (Premium Spirits too) thrown into the bergain. It's cost us £270 but a once in a lifetime opportunity so why not?!

The Barmy Army HQ in Sydney is the Paragon Hotel. That's supposed to be a good spot, but not ideal for those hoping to see the NYE fireworks in full. Good for food and drink though!

I'm toying with the idea of doing the bridge climb. I'm usually OK with heights, I'm more concerned at the price tag tbf! But again, it'll probably fall under the 'once in a lifetime' banner and go on the credit card.

Again, thanks for the advice. Much appreciated and help us to spend our time there productively (getting shit faced mainly) rather than figuring out where to go.

Brierls, I mentioned it last week in a post but any chance of a trip report when you return. Things like the flight over and cricket ticket prices/ atmosphere/banter etc. I will be keeping a eye out for the Rochdale flag so make sure you put it somewhere prominent.

I am in Thailand in a few weeks time and tried persuading the Mrs to split the trip with a visit to OZ and incorporate some of the one day games but she dismissed it out of hand, never mind. I am a bit envious of you guys.

Have a great time and look after each other.

Be careful which hotel/restaurant/bar you patronise at Coogee.

The Coogee Bay Hotel paid out a large settlement several years ago concerning its chocolate sundae. Google Coogee Bay Hotel poo for more details

Day One
Not a great start. We had a great plan that we'd start the trip off with a photo opportunity of the three of us in front of the flag. Sounds great but we hadn't realised that if we were to have a pic taken of all three of us, we'd need someone to take the picture, and there was no one to be seen anywhere. We even knocked on the door of one noted ex Messageboard user, but he remarked that he'd rather play at being Family Guy than helps his mates out.

We had a plan to visit Kirkby in Ashfield on the way down. This little town close to Mansfield is famous for being the birthplace of the great Harold Larwood, and given that we are en route to the Ashes, we felt it only appropriate to visit the town to pay respect at a statue erected in his honour. Unfortunately, when we got there we found that the statue was being used to put a tinpot Xmas tree around it. No lights, no baubels, no fairy on top but a statue of the man to do more damage to the Aussies than anyone amongst its branches. Very strange place that does that to its most famous son yet has a shop specialising in camouflage gear for kids (tagline: GI Jane's: Large range of camouflage clothing for your little soldier)

That aside, relatively trouble free journey down to deepest darkest Essex, and after checking into the hotel, we hit the pubs immediately. Lots of Xmas parties and crying babies, and one waitress was put off by TTNYear's full blown demonstration on how to "entertain" a young lady. She earned her tip.

The game was made all the more entertaining by the prematch offer of 4 shots for £6, and some home fans who were being conducted a rather large topless bloke. Its one of those horrible artificial singing sections which had streamers, drums and coordinated hand gestures. I blame Accrington.

After the game, more drinking and I must admit that I did a Jonathan Trott and bailed out much earlier than the others and called it a night. The luxury night's sleep that Travelodge was made all the more peaceful by the fire alarm going off every hour, with a full blown evacuation for an hour in the middle of the night. One bloke was carried out by six Policemen and then left at the side of the road after a ten minute grilling. The poor fella was then used as a photo opportunity for some of the hotel's young ladies who took their selfies with him as he lay out of it at the side of the road. Stay classy Southend.

He's not mentioned it, so I'm guessing not! We didn't need to see them again, the images from earlier are in the bank!

TTNYear and myself were busy sampling the delights of Southend. It was a bit of a disappointment, nowhere near as orange as I'd hoped. We did get asked for ID going into a club though, we've still not decided what is more disturbing...us going to a club (no shapes were thrown) or the fact that we got ID'd!?!?
