You are right, as much for an experienced head behind a young defence than anything else, he is dependable
Giving Mcarthy a new contract last season and making him the Number 1 was truly odd. Especially when the club wouldnt confirm he had signed a new contract.

A very strange situation, he clearly isnt the man for the first choice job.

McCarthy was the cheap option that’s why. Forster was clearly the better keeper .
Forster was Spurs' best player tonight. He is a top class goalkeeper and keeps a lot of clean sheets. That was his 30th Champions League game and 50th European game (+20 Europa League). Spurs' fans love him and see him as an improvement on Lloris. We'd be at least 8 points better off now if he'd been our goalkeeper this season. But, in the end he knew he wasn't really appreciated here and it was time for him to move on to a better club.

What I remember of Forster was him being a great keeper for us for the first 2 or 3 years and because of that being offered a bumper 5 year contract. Soon after signing that his form dipped and the majority of people (especially on here) were not only slagging him off but the club for doing that. This continued for the next 4 years with most again desperate for his contract to run down so we could get rid.
Move on to the final year of his contract and he finally got back into the team due to McCarthy's constant shitness and started putting in a few decent performances. He was definitely an upgrade on McCarthy, but still prone to errors, yet many of the people that spent the last 4 years slagging him and the club off were then outraged when he wasn't offered a new £90k per week deal and was moved on to Spurs.
It's funny how people have such short memories and re-write history.

You are doing your own re-writing there. His form did drop off a cliff after signing a whopping new contract. And yeah it was looking like a costly mistake. However he got loaned back to Celtic and regained form and the majority then wanted him back in goal, when Mccarthy was not good. Bizarrely though, off he went onloan to Celtic again. In his final season at the start of the season it was meant to be a straight shoot out between the keepers. He had a good preseason and looked like he would be number 1. But the club gave Mccarthy a new contract and made him again 1st choice. When he finally came in, after a sticky start he looked back on his A game. Who can forget his home performance against Arsenal where he virtually won the game single handily. By rights we should have been spanked that day.

Exactly this, as for ages he was rubbish for us and would never come off of his line, and many on here were even debating who should play outta McCarthy and Forster for a while on here, which in the end Forster won, but even then for the difference in how much they were getting paid yet the difference in how they were, it was a no brained as to who we got rid of.
And even then I see a few people going on saying that many spurs fans are loving him, but it was only a few weeks ago that many were slagging him off as I saw loss of spurs fans hammering him for his performance against Leicester and even a few more after the Wolves game the other day. So as much as he may have been good last night, it’s hardly like he’s been that consistent and had only had great games for spurs so far
Forster's 205 clean sheets show what a good goalkeeper he is.

Ok but when you compare the defences in front of the likes of Forster to the other 3, it’s hardly that fair. As Forster had a majority of his time here with the likes of Fonte, Van Dijk and even Alderwield in front of him here and a fairly decent defence as Celtic, whilst the others have had the likes of Bednerak, Hoedt and Diallo defending them, which is probably the biggest difference in quality for the whole league over the last 5/6 seasons
