One For Pat ! Martin On Mara 11:48 - Jan 13 with 1488 viewsSaintNick

Russell Martin On Mara

"He’s not going anywhere, no. It would be mad, wouldn’t it?"

"He is a really good footballer, a good technician, and a brilliant athlete. I really liked his performance against Walsall.

"I really rate Sekou and he has not had a huge amount of minutes, but he is coming more to the fore now and forcing his way into reckoning.

Martin went on to put more faith in Mara’s game in what should be music to the ears of the St. Mary’s faithful.

He said: "He can come across chilled at times but that is also why he will score a lot of goals. It's easy to think a manager is saying one thing and doing another.

"But he knows how I feel and he will be a big player for us between now and the end of the season."

It's also revealed that top scorer Adam Armstrong has scored a goal every 171 minutes and that Mara's average is 181 minutes per goal, Che Adams is slightly better than both of them with 167 minutes per goal, Ryan Fraser the best with 145 minutes per goal.

Worse than Mara are Charly Alcatraz at 303 minutes and Sam Edozie at 186 minutes per goal

Only 4 to go now so doable in the final part of the season

Martin is nice about everybody.

Which is fine; players want to be loved.

But if we want to go up, we need to sign somebody like Rowe from Norwich or Whittaker from Plymouth to get us over the line. Both class acts.

Mara isn’t in their league.

Poll: Would you take going down to League 1 if it meant new owners coming in?

Pat you completely miss the point, we already have better forwards than Rowe or Whitaker both of whom start most games for their clubs.

Mara isn't a starter for us, he is a squad player, neither of them would come here to be squad players.

I compare Mara to those on the bench at other clubs and from that perspective he does a good job, not a major one but a good one.

Yesterday he came on and gave Adams a rest and that is what it is about, players who can come on and we still stay strong.

No he isn't going to get in our starting line up at least at the moment, but he is an adequate replacement late in games

You completely miss the point, Nick.

He’s fine coming on when we’re 3-0 up and the game is won. Anybody could come on then, personally I would far rather see more of Dibling.

But he isn’t good enough to make the difference when we need it in close games.

You seem to be assuming that Adam Armstrong and Che Adams are going to be available for every game this season and aren’t going to get injured or suspended. If that happens and we are reliant on Mara, we’re in trouble.

Rowe or Whittaker would probably quite happily sign for us as it’s the best chance they would have of playing in the Prem in 7 months’ time.

Whatever Mara does you will not accept that he is playing a part, in our run he has come off the bench on numerous occasions, sometimes when we have scored late goals and at other times when we have needed to defend a one goal lead, he has played his part.

Even when I have pointed out a contribution as I did at Hull you just sneer at him and make up a silly nickname for him

If you walked in the Saints dressing room and gave your opinion to the side, they would throw you out.

Maybe Mara isn't the answer but if we have both forwards out then he is a decent short term replacement and we won't get a better back up in the transfer window and let us not forget that at the start of the season Adam Armstrong was also one that you said wasn't up to it.

Why would you rather see Dibling, all you have seen of him is coming on when we are 3-0 up for a couple of minutes, he could be no better than Mara.

Why would Rowe & Whittaker happily sign for us, unless Che Adams leaves, they would be coming off the bench for minutes here and there and if we went up in the summer you would be demanding we sign an experienced Premier League striker and complaining we wasted £10 million or so on signing them

Sorry Pat but sometimes you can't let things go, Sekou Mara has done nothing wrong at this club, he might not run about like Adam Armstrong but he has worked hard and not let us down.

Give him some credit
