Strength Of The Bench 08:54 - Feb 10 with 1389 viewsSaintNick

Last night emphasised the strength in depth we now have, we used 14 players last night, 3 subs in the last couple of minutes, Walcott, Long & Diallo, yet we still had :M Djenepo, Y Valery, W Smallbone, A Armstrong, W Caballero, J Stephens left on the bench & Tella & Lyanco out injured.

Compare that to a year ago when we had a load of kids on the bench, most of whom sadly wont make it at the club

Agreed - the bench has been so lacking for the last few years. Not only that but the team spirit is amazing and it's teams that win games.

We haven't had a bench that strong since Shipperley and Ruddock were named as subs and the club had to get a joiner in to add a couple of legs and some struts.

I cant agree with what you are saying there Nick. He brought long and Walcott on to waste time in the 89 and 90th minute. Thats not strength in depth.

Yes I agree.
Hopefully he has seen the light and no more Liverpool away and Norwich away ‘experiments’!
Even last Saturday’s starting line up was eye opening.
With 5 substitutions allowed and a strong bench I will say Ralph knew what he was doing.

The situation will improve when Redmond is on the bench instead of Walcott. Elyounoussi has to start. Last night's midfield of Armstrong, Ward-Prowse, Romeu and Elyounoussi is our best and, as they have shown, more than a match for any team in the league.

When we play Forster, Romeu, Stuart Armstrong and Elyounoussi together we always seem to do well.

Agree it was to waste time. I don't think Walcott actually touched the ball.

To be fair from a year ago thats a very very low benchmark, Long and Walcott shouldnt be needed if we want to progress, Stephens no where near, only Tella, Djenepo and possibly at a push Armstrong should be in the squad.

That was just under 3 years ago though… and back then the players we had on the bench and such were soo poor, whilst now they’re certainly at least promising, experienced or a decent player

Dunno about that completely as Stephens is certainly better than Djenpo or Tella, as he’s got experience and has proven to be pretty decent over recent years, whilst Tella looked all great in the past but just isn’t predicting anything and the same for Djenpo. But still, it is the best bench we’ve had in quite some time
