Southampton V Villarreal The Verdict on 09:48 - Jul 31 with 1092 viewssaintwizzler

2 points -

1. I was not at the game but looking at the highlights do you think Salisu should of done better in marking his man for their opener?

2. If we have not anyone capable of playing Left Wing Back to a good standard then either that formation should be ditched in favour of one where players can perform in.
Or if the manager wanted to play this formation why did he not get a player in that CAN play LWB?

Chucking in a right footed attacker who has zero defensive positioning or experience in that role is just asking for trouble.

But with Hassenhüttl we have come to expect the unexpected, changing it a half time when we are three goals down just ain’t on.

Asking for a friend…

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.
Poll: Knowing what we know now, should we have sacked Hasenhüttl?

Their opener came as a direct result of our defenders being pushed too far forward for a 3 at the back formation. Walker-Peters and Djenepo were played as wingers, while Salisu was playing more like a wing-back, leaving us woefully exposed to counter-attacks. I hope Ralph doesn't try the same against Spurs because they are one of the fastest counter-attacking teams in the country.

It's not as if throwing all those defenders forwards achieves anything as we don't have a striker who can put the ball in the net. On numerous occasions, Walker-Peters, who spent almost the entire game in the opposition half, was looking for someone in front of goal to cross the ball to and on the rare occasions he found one of our strikers there, they didn't look like they had a clue how to put the ball in the net.

Unless Sekou Mara, who looked a bit lost yesterday, steps up fast, we are going to be relying almost totally on our midfielders to score goals this season, which, fortunately, we know Ward-Prowse and Aribo can do.

Poll: Who will win the Premier League this season?

I went to the game.

It was the same old Saints to be honest, but with some different players.

Had a few early chances, didn't score, relied on a few last ditch defensive interceptions to get us out of trouble, gifted the opposition a goal, huffed and puffed and managed to get back into it (with a magical goal), got carved open and ultimately punished.

Our performance was littered with sloppy passing, stupid flicks that unnecessarily gave possession away, trying to play our way out of trouble and giving it away in dangerous areas and a few players looking out of sorts.

Djenepo is not the answer at LWB. He doesn't have the defensive positioning, doesn't track his man and when he does get further forward, all he does is some step overs, or run it into traffic. Even when playing further forward towards the end of the game, he was brilliantly picked out at the far post by Ketchup, but took too long to get his shot off, for what should have been a goal. He also put a great chance in the first half into the side netting, emulating S Armstrong from minutes earlier !!

We still don't have any organisation at the back. Bednarek told the other 2 off after the event a few times, but we need someone to organise things in the actual passage of play. Ketchup got out-muscled down the flank for their opener and despite a slight deflection, everyone was expecting Bednarek to cut out or clear the cross, but he missed it and presented them with an easy chance.

Bazunu did ok. He didn't have many saves to make, but his passing, sweeping and organisation seemed much better than AMcC and made the crowd feel less nervous. I think he expected Bed to clear for the 1st goal and the 2nd was a good finish after a defence splitting pass.

Aribo looked impressive in parts. He doesn't quite have an understanding with everyone else just yet - especially in a rather congested midfield, but he showed great class, skill and composure for his goal - running 60-70 yards with the ball, beating 4 men, evading a couple more and cleverly switching in onto his left foot to slot home.

Mara looked lost. I don't know whether he was trying too hard, but he tended to stay on the right and preferred to try to take 2 or 3 men on instead of passing it. He didn't seem to have much of a presence and seemed almost reluctant to get into the box. At least S Armstrong showed him what is expected in terms of putting a shift in.

I don't know why the majority of Subs weren't made til the 80 something minute. Even in usual games RH sometimes makes changes before then !! The cavalry came on and we actually created some good chances, with Perraud just missing the far post, a couple of other good efforts and then the Redmond volley - in the box, centre of goal and pulled it so far left, it would have missed at least another whole goal !! :-)

Rather disappointing performance for me. Spurs will tear us apart if we play like that and we need to be more organised and move the ball so much quicker.

I'm surprised the likes of Ely and Adams didn't feature, so not sure if that means they aren't going to start next week, or in Adams' case, Sold ? Would also think that Romeu starts in front of Lavia next week ?

Finally - why, oh why, oh why, do we still get complete c0cks who run onto the pitch. WAC. Hope the stewards gave the attention seeking little tw@t a good kicking.

Standard Hasenhuttl with a lack of organisation and too attack minded.

Over 180 goals conceded since he turned up and one of the main reasons is hes got nothing other than a wingback approach and defenders too far up the pitch to deal with the counter.

I think you'll find that Ralph will be gone if he we have a have a bad start to the season. Under new owners and having spent money, he will be under huge pressure from the off.

Poll: Would you like Ings to come back?
