Saints remind me of the Sunderland team 9 years ago. 19:21 - Feb 4 with 1193 viewsfelly1

The slow decline at Southampton FC started with the Gao takeover,
We are in a full on tailspin towards the Champoinship now.
We need 7 wins out our 17 remaining games just to get us to 36 points.
Sunderland experienced a similar thing culminating in our 8 nil thrashing of them.
A collection of different managers came and went but the losing mentality was deeply embedded and the defeatism took them to League 1 for quite a few seasons.
Are we on a similar path?

That losing mentality started 18 months ago and unfortunately went on far too long before the club tried to address it. I’m going to say, they’ve got it horribly wrong.

I think this is a pretty good comparison. We're an absolute mess now. Is this what Rasmus Ankersen meant by his "If it ain't broke then break it" management philosophy? 🤮

Feels like in Ankersen we have a tech bro 'disruptor' who worships the ground people like Elon Musk walk on, and in Jones we have a bizarre amalgamation of David Brent and Liz Truss.

Fans forum should be interesting

Funnily enough, Truss is in the papers this morning blaming everyone except her own inept judgement and failure to pull the correct levers. Self belief is a great thing, but not when it is totally disconnected from reality and the skills and experience to apply sound judgement.

The comparisons with Sunderland are apt. An owner that had no knowledge or feel for football that appointed like thinking executives, but ultimately could not keep his fingers out of the pie.

I agree with all of that but prefer to see things like this.

I don’t buy a season ticket to watch my team get hammered most weeks, I feel pi***sed off after most games and often can’t be bothered to go to the pub .

The championship would make me feel happier as we would win more games and visit different grounds. Yes it is difficult to get back to the premier league but why would you want to anyway ? Yes you are richer but you’re still not going to compete with the big clubs.

It doesn’t matter who you are in the premier league if you’re not a big club because nobody mentions you ,nobody cares about you, you have no chance of winning anything so what’s the point in being there ? .

Only four clubs in England win anything major . Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal. As I’ve said before We’ve become too small for the premier league because of years of mismanagement.

Poll: Would you take an Fa Cup win if it meant relegation to the championship ?

Just thinking exactly the same thing. We have the Liz Truss of football management.

My concern is that we'll continue to be perennial losers in the Championship too.
That's where the Sunderland comparison comes in.
A losing mentality.. A beaten fan base, we're all psychologically damaged now!!
It maybe a long road of many years to recover... Bloody hope not!.

Yes considering the rubbish we’ve had to deal with over many years I think our support is good especially away. It does annoy me when people mock our fans. I was at Newcastle and the support was superb , very loud and proud and many geordies on forums said the same. Considering it was midweek a 700 mile round trip with not a lot of chance of winning it was very impressive. If only we had a single vocal stand at St Mary’s . 😀
