Romeu to Barcelona? 13:09 - May 26 with 2198 viewsdirk_doone

Several sites are reporting this. Apparently, Barcelona see him as the replacement for Busquets. At 31, he's at his peak.

Yeah I saw this... Not surprising really.. He was such a good Cdm, appreciate he wanted to go home but the vast majority of us could see how important he was to the team/squad and we should have made him a great offer to stay one more season and play alongside Lavia.

If this is true I'd be delighted for him and it kind of sums up the absolute mental decision making at Saints have been making these last few seasons.

He wanted to go as soon as he found out Hassenhutl was staying.

You could make a decent Premier League team from the players we let go because we thought they were too old or not good enough for us, some of whom have gone on to play in the Champions League after they left.

The best teams, like Real Madrid and Man City, have plenty of players in their 30s. Most players, like Kevin De Bruyne, reach their peak at around 31 nowadays. That's one of the main areas where we've gone wrong with our transfer policy. We let them go before they reach their peak, often many years before they reach it.

What we need to do now is rebuild the team like McMenemy did, with older pros. Getting the 33-year-old Peter Shilton was one of his shrewdest moves.

McMenemy had it spot on for a club like us.
Finding seasoned professionals, often internationals then feeding in promising youth.

Absolutely, that's the right balance for Saints. The problem is we've gone overboard on signing promising youth, not for what they can do on the pitch for us, but for the potential profit they might make when they're sold. That speculative approach has now cost us hundreds of millions in lost Premier League revenue and left us around £200 mill in debt.

They got it back to front, bring your youth through the academy and buy good experienced professionals to work with them.

Talk to the like of Steve Moran, Steve Williams, Danny Wallace etc about what they learnt from those seasoned pros and it proves the point

Or the absolute conveyor belt of great central defenders who've learned from playing alongside Fonte:

Lovren, Alderweireld, van Dijk, Gabriel, Botman, Djaló......
