Lose to Grismby , struggle to a poor win over Blackpool and a penalty win over shef Wednesday . Rip it up and start and start again as orange juice once sang

If you look at the starting line ups in those games . Blackpool - Only Perraud, Edozie, Aribo & Mara of those likely to stay. Grimsby - Perraud, Djenepo, Ad Armstrong & Mara So I would say that neither of those games was an indication of what we will do next season. Or I could counter with the fact that Diallo, Djenepo, Mara and Adam Armstrong all started in the league cup against City and played well in a 2-0 win so it shows that they have can play to a good level

| Southampton Squad Has Good Foundations Even After Star Player Exodus on 16:16 - Jul 4 with 1209 views | PatfromPoole | I heard from This Charming Man a few days ago, sadly no longer of this parish. He mentioned to me a phrase which Alan Pardew used to refer to; he said we had too many players of a losing mentality (Pardew referred to needing a winning mentality, but it's essentially the same point). Until we get a core of winners in the team, players who essentially will not accept failure, we will be destined to struggle, whatever League we are in. Too many of the current lot are happy just to collect their big pay cheque and put in the occasional good performance to ensure their agent can stlll tout them around. | |

The whole point though is the big name players who are getting the money will be leaving, the players such as Adam Armstrong, Diallo, Perraud, Smallbone, will be staying, they got unfair stick last season, they all worked hard and gave 100% whilst the likes of Bella-Kotchap, Salisu etc played when they felt like it. The problem with the Premier League and the players know this as much as anyone is that you can put together a team of winners, people who are not accept failure etc but that has no use whatsoever when you are playing the likes of Manchester City you are playing players with the same attitude but more than that who are much better quality and are surrounded by those of the same ilk. It is fine to talk of winning mentality, we had it for two seasons in League 1 and the Championship, but look at our first half dozen games back in the top flight, we got walloped in most of them. That was a team of winners but it cut no ice. There is no current lot, 10-15 of last seasons squad will go, so no point it harping on about them, look to the players at the club who will be committed and support them and hope that we bring in those who can compliment them. Pardew's team was not a team of winners, or at least wasn't under his leadership, Nigel Adkins honed the players that Pardew brought in and we got two promotions, but once they got into the Premier League they were no longer winners just average Premier League players, nothing to be ashamed of because in today's game you are either mega rich or nowhere

It's not just about working hard and giving 100%. That should be a given. It's about having the mental toughness to win, and not to cave in when we concede a goal. Having the belief that you can come back and win a game late on, as teams who get promoted invariably do regularly. We simply don't have it, as we are not used to winning football matches. Three of those players you mention simply go missing when the going gets tough and you hardly notice them on the pitch (Adam Armstrong, Diallo and Smallbone).

10 -15 players will go really ? I don’t think that at all. Maybe 7/8 I reckon that’s in addition to those that have already gone ie Walcott and Elynouissi. I think you’ll be surprised. I’m hearing the likes of Alcarez and Tino are keen to stay which could be complete rubbish of course time will tell. Salisu and Kotchap can leave as you say, half hearted players. The good thing is the likes of Tella and Smallbone who proved last year how good they are for this league and they are both returning and they’ll be keen to impress along with the likes of Ballard. Tella and Smallbone got raving reviews last season . I don’t think those two will be going anywhere. I predict we’ll do ok this season but none of us will really know yet but I don’t think they’ll be a huge exodus. [Post edited 4 Jul 2023 18:07]
