That one last night where we had a free-kick in the first half in a great position on the right-wing, and Manning tried to be clever and play it short. Nobody was looking, backs were turned, and Leicester should have scored then. Different gravy, that. And I am now more nervous than ever when we have a corner. Supposed to be a good chance to score, it is now a big chance for the oppo to break and score. The tactic still appeared to be to leave one at the back. And not anybody with any pace either. Utterly shambolic all round.

You don't have a set piece coach and then leave it up to the players. Rusty believes in pressing the opposition in to their final third and not letting them out (this is what he says in an online coaching video). That's why he doesn't bother having anyone covering because that's one player less that can be keeping them boxed in. Trouble is - this is stupid. But I do sense a change of heart in his post match comments which noted how vulnerable we are on the transition (no shit Sherlock). Maybe we'll see a compromise next time.

You need players with a combination of pace and aggression to play that game. Man.City can mix it up; they are physical when they need to be. We seem to me to be a one-trick pony. I think this tactic may work against teams in the bottom-third of this League, who lack the nous (and pace) to beat the press. But against the better sides we will keep getting found out. Midtable at best this season, I suspect. [Post edited 16 Sep 2023 10:45]
