| Waterfront Expansion Plans 18:42 - Nov 6 with 1476 views | Southamptonfan | https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/ne As has been mentioned on social media, this all sounds very exciting but is it? The club must never forget its roots and its loyal fans. We don't want St Mary's to be one huge money making theme park or circus for people who follow other clubs or for people just interested in making money or do we? We don't want tickets to be given to the local waterfront hotel investors or those who work for the newly adjoined SFC helicopter station getting tickets before loyal fans get to buy them. I think the Dell bar, Level one and fanzones are actually really good and provide for Saints fans, so they are a good sign. But when they say we are developing a sports centre, I hope they don't start having Barcelona v Madrid evenings or champions league special nights for the top 6 in the SFC hotel, restaurants, bars and the rest of it. They should not forget that we are Southampton Football club and the Saints fans should come before any sports fans / investors. But if it brings in lots of money... What do we think? | Waterfront Expansion Plans on 19:33 - Nov 6 with 0 views | Ifonly | The city, like most of the country, badly needs new investment and growth so I'm not about to start complaining. Good luck to them and I hope they make a lot of money doing it, but the way they structure it will need careful thought. It needs to be done so that the football club gets revenue but is also shielded from the possibility of a huge project going wrong. It's a decade or so from happening, but if it eventually does happen, I couldn't care less if they have Barcelona v Madrid evenings and I'm not precious about the stadium and surroundings being used by other clubs and their supporters. What's the problem? Is this sacred ground or something? Chelsea currently let other clubs use Stamford Bridge for champions league games. Is that a problem? Villa used to let other clubs play a FA cup semi final at Villa Park pretty much every year. Was that a problem? It wouldn't be a problem for me. | | | |

I don't necessarily care if St Mary's stadium is being used for random champions league games, England games or huge boxing matches and concerts. That will bring money to the area etc and has no impact on Saints fans other than probabaly giving us more money to soend on the Saints team. I worry about more of this sort of thing which is already happening: https://tickets.frontrowpromot Some might say well what does it matter, but are they doing an evening.with Southampton legends at Spurs ground? Spurs are a rival. Why do we want their fans using our stadium? Do a legends evening for their club at their ground not ours! How far will they go? A Harry Rednapp Halloween Hotel evening? A bus tour of a top 6 club around Southampton to celebrate them winning the league for their southern or foreign fans, who then use the SFC hotel and part of the stadium etc? Picture frames of the Tottenham greats around the stadium? I wouldn't like any of that. Or will those Spurs fans who pay a lot of money to go to the VIP legends evening, get SFC perks instead of loyal Saints fans? Hotel investors, staff, non Saints fans getting access to away games before loyal fans. This already happens now, when blocks are left unsold for P and O staff or whoever, just because they pay a lot of.money. That is the worry. Maybe these worries are completely wrong, and the development will turn Saints into a world force 😅 [Post edited 7 Nov 0:30]

"Spurs are a rival. Why do we want their fans using our stadium?" I want Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd fans to use the stadium on a regular basis because that will mean that Saints are successful. I want them to show up every year when their teams play us in the PL. Do you want to ban away fans from matches? I also have no problem with them having legends evenings at St Marys. If they want to give money to our club instead of theirs, then go ahead. If we accept that we want away fans in the stadium for matches, then what's the problem with them showing up for a legends evening instead of a match? You don't have a problem with SFC hosting other matches, so how about a Spurs legends v Chelsea legends match? If that's ok, then what's wrong with the same fans showing up for an evening meeting those legends in person instead of watching a match? So long as they are paying SFC for the tickets I don't care. We're not going to see Spurs doing a bus top tour around the city, or anything like that. That's just not a real problem. Also the point about P&O and other sponsors not using the tickets we've sold them is a different issue.

Away fans arriving to see their team play Southampton, is completely different to away fans arriving for a legends evening that doesn't involve Southampton whatsoever. Legends evenings should take place at the stadium where the legends were legends. Would you have a Le Tissier testimonial played at Old Trafford? I think the point I am making is clear. Ofcourse we want Spurs, Arsenal and Man Utd fans to use the stadium on a regular basis as away fans when playing Southampton, but I don't want them here when they arn't playing Southampton! Chelsea are allowing a team from Ukraine use their stadium for obvious reasons, but I think their fans would have something to say if their ground started being used for Tottenham, Man U or Arsenal games, evenings and testimomials. Use your own ground they would say, wouldn't they. If we are to develop the waterfront as a leading sports destination, great. But this is Southampton Football Club and must cater for our fans, bring in new fans of SFC, not cater for fans of other clubs (unless they are here because they are playing Saints) That's my opinion. So if we go back to having cup semi finals at neutral grounds (like we used to at Villa Park etc) then you would be against SFC hosting any semi final because that would mean having away fans in the stadium when Saints weren't playing ("I don't want them here when they arn't playing Southampton!") Don't you think that's a pretty extreme reaction? Why do you think the fans of Man U, Chelsea, Villa, Sheff Weds etc. were perfectly happy to have those games played on their grounds?

Again, I wouldn't mind a semi final played at St Mary's because that is two random sides and consent across the country that a neutral ground is needed for semi games, as Saints would be provided with the same thing if we got to the semis. Let me ask you something. Would it make sense to have a testimonial for a Southampton player in Manchester or an eveining with Saints legends in Newcastle?

So you'd be happy with Spurs playing another club in a game at St Mary's. So presumably you'd also be happy with Spurs playing another club in an FA Legends Cup game at St Mary's. So what would be the problem with the legends talking to the crowd instead of playing football for them? Same players, same fans, what's the problem? No it wouldn't make sense to "have a testimonial for a Southampton player in Manchester or an eveining with Saints legends in Newcastle" because they'd be poorly attended. But if someone wants to try it out I've got no problem with that. But I'd prefer in all cases that the events happened at St Mary's because then the ticket revenue would go to SFC instead of another club.

I wouldn't want thousands of Pompey fans, Boro fans, Man U fans, Spurs fans in our city even for a semi final actually, even if it meant that ticket revenue went to SFC. Why wouldn't Spurs have a legends game at their.own ground!? I don't want legends evenings, as Spurs won't do the same thing for us. I could probably stomach other fans here for an agreed semi final as Saints would be given a neutral ground too, but even then the thought of a load of Skates in Southampton, Millwall or whoever would bother me probably. You don't care, you are happy for fans of other clubs to swarm.our city, I do care and wouldn't like it, okay we agree to disagree. [Post edited 7 Nov 14:11]

How do you know that Spurs wouldn't host a legends evening? Let's be real about this. Any legends evening is a few hundred people at most. The max attendance in the Mick Channon suite is 500. Hardly swarming the city. Neither would the skates be involved. Their fans wouldn't let them and even if they did, plod would veto it.

Well exactly, that's why it isn't a particularly good idea to have other fans in another team's city as certain sides just wouldn't be welcome, even if they were giving money to SFC. Why have a Spurs legends evening at the home of Southampton but no planned Southampton legends evening at the home of Spurs? The answer is not something we should be encouraging. Let's see if there is any trouble when the Spurs legends event takes place. I doubt it.

Not for a legends evening, but why have one for them but we don't have one at their ground? Is it because Saints are catering for all the glory hunters, plastics and tourists? You know there are other eveings planned too for top 6 clubs at St Mary's? What message are we sending out here? [Post edited 7 Nov 15:24]

| Waterfront Expansion Plans on 16:11 - Nov 7 with 0 views | kingslandstand1 | To throw my 5 penneth in, if SCC are anything to do with this, it will probably never get the go ahead as with many other major proposals that have been put forward. Just as well Clarke says it's a long term plan! But I like the principal, within reason, but re other clubs using our facilities? I'm not so sure, but why on earth would they want to. I just cannot understand this Spurs Legends do at all when you consider what they've got to play with. Are there that many of their fans down here? But if it brings dosh in then why not? I do like any thing that will open up the waterfront though | |
