It's The "Magic" Of The FA Cup

Okay, okay I know that's a little premature and maybe we will have to do the first and second rounds next season but we can be quite good at this FA Cup stuff you know.

It was the 5th round in 2003/4 and the 3rd round last time around that proved our undoing in the competition and in theory we head into Saturday's game as favourites against a Stockport side that they tell us are utter shite. But prepare yourself for that magic of the FA Cup when every pundit eyeing a contract at the BBC next year lines up to tell you that "the form book goes out of the window" or "Ronnie Radford in blah blah blah" or even "And John Aldridge missed a penalty in that final you know" That's right every Tom, Dick and Arse is a font of all knowledge when the FA Cup comes around.

And just to prove that we want to be no different on this site. We will share with you in this preview two unknown facts about the two sides that will meet up at Edgely Park on Saturday. Starting with our hosts.

Everybody knows that an ASBO dog by the name of Pickles once pinched the World Cup. Well clearly that was a dog that aimed high and matched his achievement. Unlike a Stockport dog by the name of Eggbert who once nicked the FA Cup. The Year was 2004 and the one sides final between Manchester United and Millwall. Eggbert at the time of the final was on a leisurely walk through the streets of Stockport (that's what the smell is) but when he came back home it was just at the moment that Roy "I hate my team mates" Keane was lifting the cup. As the cameras panned away to the predictable tears of a Millwall fan, Keane tucked the cup into his pocket and headed off for a private celebration in his Cheshire home. (Why do all footballers live in Cheshire?)

Not was it for the Irishman to celebrate with the people he tells MUTV 'smell' but a private celebration with his wife, three children and nine Rottweilers. Bear with me as this is where Eggbert comes back into the tale. As Roy arrived back at his Cheshire mansion Eggbert was just coming out of the house next door. Now what you don't know but soon will is that Eggbert was the dog of Alf Inge Haaland. Now naturally sensing revenge for that tackle he flew at Roy and a snarling of teeth and a growling session from both parties ending with Eggbert eating the FA Cup from Roy's pocket whilst Roy ate Eggbert's ear. And so the FA Cup was effectively lost. Not a great story admittedly but what was reasonably amusing was watching Roy Keane spending the next three days by Eggbert's backside waiting for the said cup to pass through the system. Much of course to the amusement of Alf Inge Haaland.

Now I have to say that if you thought that story was crap I really would stop reading now - you know it will only get worse. And if you don' stop then I have to say now that you only have yourself to blame.

What is a little known fact is that Swansea City were the first club to take the FA Cup out of England. Forget what folklore will tell you that it was our friends from Cardiff it was indeed Swansea City. The Year was 1893 and the FA Cup was then called "The New Cup, England" for it was new you see. Well, reasonably new anyway. But you get the drift.

It had just been won by Old Engineers yet again (did Old Engineers local derby get played against Royal Engineers?) when controversy struck the long bearded ones. A new government department called health and safety was being formed in London and they deemed that WG Grace beards were not safe especially not on yellow painted areas and believe you me the old engineer factory had plenty of yellow painted areas. Not a problem you suspect at the moment. Until you think that the Old Engineers were the David Beckhams and Lee Trundles of their days. Image rights were important and the barber to the stars was based in Mumbles - one Don Piper (I know you're nodding if you are from Mumbles!)

No issue so far as Old Engineers spent the next week trapsing down the soon-to-be-M4-but-currently-fields-of-horse-shit to get to Mumbles and an appointment with Don. Eleven beardless hours later the deed was done and Don's bill was presented to Old Engineers. Shock, horror grew on their now clean shaven faces as they realised that the bill was more than they could afford. Some bartering was needed. And the only thing that could be thought of was the FA Cup. Of course you couldn't just give a trophy away and Old Engineers offered to play Don's local side, Swansea City (ignoring the fact they hadn't yet been formed) in a match at the New Stadium, Swansea (soon to be known as the Vetch)

Don was only too eager to agree and two days later a crowd of 79,412 turned up at the New Stadium to see the Swans triumph by three goals to nil. And that was that, the FA Cup was handed over and remained on proud display in Don's shop for the best part of the next 12 months. Of course, the roll of honour will never show this but it was the first time that the FA Cup had been taken out of England. No matter what anybody else tells you.

As I said, don't blame me I told you to stop reading!

Onto Saturday's game. Swansea. Last week. 5-1. Home. Stockport. Last Week. 0-6. Away. Can only mean one thing. Stockport 1-11 Swansea. Get your money on it and if it happens then just give us 10% of your winnings. That's fair surely?

For our team news. We'll have eleven players playing for us and early indications from Stockport suggest the same for them. We should win but what you have to remember is that this is the FA Cup and the form book goes out of the window, Blah de blah de blah. Can I have my job at the BBC now?

Que Sera Sera, whatever will be, will be, we're goingto Webley (if indeed it is finished on time failing that we may go to Cardiff instead but the reality is we probably won't) - hope you held that last note there!!

Have a good one - it's the FA Cup and I love it!
