Saints Set To Raid Celtic For Fourth Summer In A Row
Friday, 1st Apr 2016 08:43

Saints have been regular shoppers at the Celtic Park Megastore in previous years and now they are seemingly set to make it a fourth summer in a row.

In 2013 Saints signed Victor Wanyama from Celtic, in 2014 they went back and brought Fraser Forster to St Mary's and then last summer it was Virgil Van Dyke who waved goodbye to Glasgow and headed to Hampshire and now Saints are being linked again with a Celtic player.

The man in question this time is 18 year old wonderkid Kieran Tierney.

Although born in Douglas on the Isle Of Man Tierney has lived in Scotland since he was 10 months old, a Celtic supporter as a child he joined the club at age 7 and progressed through the various youth ranks to make his first team debut in April 2015 as a substitute, making his first start for the club before the season was out.

He broke into the side this season at the end of October and since then has been pretty much a regular, prompting speculation linking him with a number of clubs South of the border and earning him his first cap a full level for Scotland earlier this week when he started the friendly game against Denmark, completing 45 minutes before being substituted.

Now Saints are being touted as he front runner for his services at what appears a bargain £5 million, however there is one stumbling block as to why Saints might not be as interested as the media may suggest and that is he is a left back.

Saints of course have two highly rated players in this position in Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett and although it is likely that Bertrand may move on in a season or two, Targett looks to have what it takes to eventually replace him full time as a left back, in the meantime being versatile enough to play other roles alongside Bertrand when the situation requires.

However if the price is correct at £5 million Saints might feel it is worth the money now and get themselves a step ahead of the game given that Bertrand will eventually leave and indeed this does fit Saints strategy now that means getting in a players replacement now at a good price and having him in situ for when that player leaves for a grossly inflated fee.

Some North of the border though feel that Kierney being a die hard Celt will not want to move so soon and will want to spend a few more years with the club to gain experience and win a few more medals along the way.
