Liverpool Football Club have just issued an official statement apologising for the "misunderstanding" over Virgil Van Dijk.

The Anfield club have put out a statement that reads.

Liverpool Football Club would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs.

We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk.

We respect Southampton's position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player.

The very fact that they have seen fit to do so suggests that they have realised that their behaviour has overstepped the mark and looks like it is now damage limitation for the Merseyside club, certainly had they not done anything underhand either in approaching the player, using the media to unsettle him or a combination of both they would not feel the need to apologise.

Whether they will now not pursue Virgil Van Dijk remains to be seen and the cynical side of me thinks that this is reverse psychology, that they will step back and hope the player himself now forces the move, so they can claim that it is Van Dijk himself who has instigated the situation.

BoondockSaint added 20:14 - Jun 7 They will only end their interest is if they have solid proof other teams will out-bid them. Lazz- Doubt they get a ban because they are in the top four. However, if they do, it will be the usual "football" ban....big press release about the ban for the "integrity" of the sport.....then they appeal and it is quietly reduced to practically nothing.....

SanDiegoSaint added 20:39 - Jun 7 Liverpool already have a suspended transfer embargo for their youth team in place form previously tapping up a Stoke youth. I'd imagine they have real cause to be scared of the consequences of an FA investigation.

SaintBrock added 12:09 - Jun 8 An apology what effing good is that? Damage has been done and seeds sown and any future vD saw here has been scuppered. We are left with a seriously disenchanted player at the core of our team as the others will sense every time they join up in the dressing room. Saints cannot undo this damage and even the satisfaction of a very serious fine will not compensate for the disruption caused here. Maybe they should be removed from next season's Champions League competition which would not only screw them for next season and deprive them of income but make them seriously unattractive to 'star' world players. Would serve them bloody right. I know, I know...... it won't happen as the PL, the FA and UEFA are gutless spineless, morally deficient and a closed society and Scouse-arses are part of the nasty clan
