Mohammed Salisu Back In Training For Saints
Tuesday, 8th Mar 2022 21:34

Southampton fans were given a boost this evening when pictures showed the central defender back training with the first team squad after missing the last two games with a hamstring injury.

Whether the Ghanian will be fit enough to face Newcastle united on Thursday evening is still unclear, however it is a boost just to see him back on the training pitch and if he doesn't make the game against the Geordies then hopefully he should be ready for the Watford game on Sunday.

Ralph Hasenhuttl will also be pleased to have Nathan Tella back in the squad and although again it is unclear how near full fitness he is, he too could return to first team contention sooner than later.

Salisu may not start on Thursday but the fact that he is back in training is a good sign. Stats. show his CB partnership with JB has provided more clean sheets (playing together) in Prem, games than any other pairing and a lower % goals conceded overall .
Both Stephens and Lyanco (in different pairings) are only somewhat worse, but clearly the MS / JB combination has a better "understanding " when playing together.
Mo's return to the squad must be seen as very positive.

Clearly some clubs fans have very different evaluations of player-ability and value.
Some " hack" journos have quoted our better players at ridiculously (low) sums, and a Newcastle scribe recently quoted Salisu as a " Newcastle target valued at... £40 million ".
On overall displays I'd look to see Mo a bit closer to the VvD valuation than that.
(I don't know whether to laugh or cry - as one of us is way off the mark).

The defence was woeful against Villa and in total disarray, so Sali simply has to come straight back in.
Hopefully that Villa result is a kick up the arse we needed after perhaps getting a little complacent after our run of recent results.
