Along with all other Premier League games, Saints game against Brentford this weekend has been postponed as a mark of respect following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This will also see the B team and the Women's games postponed as well.

Saints have confirmed that the game against Brentford has been called off following the death of the Queen yesterday as will all Premier League games.

Richard Masters, the Premier League Chief Executive, said:

“We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country. As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”

As of yet there is no decision made on the matches due to be played the following weekend when we travel to Aston Villa, I am lead to believe this decision will be made as soon as the exact details of the Queen's funeral are confirmed.

Southampton supporters have a certain affinity for the Queen given that many of us over the age of 55 watched a football match with her at Wembley on May 1st 1976 and after it a whole city rejoiced as she handed the FA Cup over to Peter Rodrigues.

This was the last FA Cup Final that she attended, some will say it was the last football match that she watched, that is true, but she did open Derby County's Pride Park Stadium on 18 July 1997, although no football match was played.

I'm sure most members & Visitors of the Ugly Inside will join me in expressing our deepest condolences to all of the Royal Family at this time, and we join all of the County whatever their views on the Royal Family in expressing our thanks for the services of The Queen to the nation.

kristianJ added 14:23 - Sep 9 A sad day. She was certainly a wonderful, understated and dutiful monarch. However I do think the weekend games should have gone ahead. The fans could have paid tribute to her with a 2 minutes silence/applause, which would have been a fitting way for the public to show their respects and I suspect this is what the Queen would have wanted. Also a lot of travelling fans (not me) would have already made commitments to travel, paid for hotels etc - they don’t seem to have been considered here.

DellBoyWally added 14:47 - Sep 9 Either way people will disagree. Neither is right nor wrong. We can just accept the decision. It seems that the following weekend will be the funeral so matches will likely be postponed. Re-arrangement dates will be late January 2023 at the earliest due to the World Cup having been sold so we might have a different team!!!

SanMarco added 14:56 - Sep 9 Even a bolshey old republican like me has great respect for the Queen - a sad day indeed. Of course such a huge moment has to be properly marked and mourned. I do, however, wonder what the point of calling matches off is? You would have heard a pin drop during the 2 mins silences up and down and the country and there would have been plenty of respect around. On your average weekend hundreds of thousands attend football together - what better way to commemorate this sad event but in huge gatherings. Instead everyone will be at home doing nothing much.

ItchenNorth added 15:29 - Sep 9 I agree with San Marco. What a fantastic moment it would be if up and down the country, at events everywhere, we stood together in a moment of reflection. The national anthem sung. I understand the reasons why everything is canceled but I always feel it is unfortunate we can not show our appreciation at times like these. RIP Queen Elizabeth

saintmark1976 added 16:07 - Sep 9 I appreciate that you can’t please all of the people all of the time but I just can not see the reasoning here, particularly given that other sports events appear to be going ahead. If my memory serves me correctly on the weekend after the Queen Mother died I am sure we played at home on the Saturday. There was an immaculately held two minutes silence during which those that wanted to were able to pay their respects, just as SanMarco and ItchenNorth suggest could have happened tomorrow. Calling the matches off this weekend and possibly next weekend also, strikes me as a massive missed opportunity by the Football Association and the Premier League to further the image of Football both at home and internationally.Equally importantly,I don’t suspect that the Queen would have wished to stop people enjoying themselves on her behalf.

I would suggest that not many families have members who pay large sums of money to women to avoid scrutiny in court or accept charity donations in cash contained in a bag. You may not agree with him but at the end of the day he’s entitled to his opinion is he not ?

saintmark1976 added 09:47 - Sep 11 The problem with your suggestion redwight is that you then run the risk of the majority saying that there is never an appropriate time for a minority view opposite to theirs, to be expressed. I don’t believe that an individuals freedom of expression should be limited to particular moments in time. You may not agree with Colburn and consider his comments to be insensitive at the present ( as I am sure many others do also ) but telling him when he can make his views known is not a proposition which has merit in my opinion.
