Incoming transfer news on 18:57 - Aug 17 by D_Alien | Because when he's not scoring, Bunney has nothing to contribute. If you can't control the ball, have it taken away from you very easily by defenders, consistently fail to find a team-mate with a pass, you're a liability. Davies has played at a higher level. Can you imagine a championship side even thinking about signing Bunney? Those stats you quote include long periods in the championship, and even if they didn't, the time for thinking Bunney is going anywhere has gone. I think Hilly realises that too. |
Well, I hope those enthusing about this signing prove to be justified. I'm not so much defending Bunney - though in terms of goals in L1 last season he does have the better record - as wondering whether Davies, even at 28, still has much to offer. In the seven weeks since he was released by Bradford he seems not to have been much sought after by other managers. I wonder why Dale didn't face more competition for his services, and whether an element of panic buying isn't involved. We'll see.

You'll struggle to defend Bunney to most as it's blindingly obvious he's way out of his depth, his all round game is abysmal and when he's not scoring a wet bag offers more strength up front.

Incoming transfer news on 18:38 - Aug 17 by D_Dale | Last season, Davies scored 5 goals in 30 appearances (incl. 1 vs Dale on 20 Feb). Last season, Bunney scored 9 goals in 34 appearances (incl. 2 vs Bradford on 20 Feb). Why has he 'got to be more effective than Bunney'? |

Incoming transfer news on 20:08 - Aug 17 with 3020 views | 442Dale | Not sure why there are comparisons being made to Bunney. The big question is whether he'll offer more than Calvin. Jury is out on this signing for me. We can only judge on what we see.

Incoming transfer news on 20:32 - Aug 17 with 2953 views | RotherhamDale | Isn't Davies a target man? Calvin is already our target man. Surely we'd have been better getting a smaller, quicker forward? In the dagnall/le fondre mould.
| Possession with progression. |

Incoming transfer news on 17:54 - Aug 17 by D_Alien | No, I can't, but if we signed someone who can help protect the back four, it'd make a difference to how exposed McNulty has been. He could come good again - he had a pretty consistent season at fullback last year and I don't recall any posts suggesting he should be replaced. On the other wing, Rafferty started with Cannon in front of him. McNulty has Hendo. If we signed another RB he could end up sitting on the bench for the next nine months. |
The first line of the last paragraph - spot on.

What we need is a player who can cover a multitude of positions, across the back four and in midfield. A player who is aware it'll result in time on the bench, but that he'll know he will have a part to play. This player will also show some potential, though we will also have to accept he'll suffer dips in form and be out injured himself. If only such a player existed at the club... and not at bleeding Mansfield.

It's baffling to release such a decent versatile player then re sign lesser ex players... | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Incoming transfer news on 22:11 - Aug 17 with 2647 views | macro | Cover is needed defensively definitely but Bennett was rightly released at the end of last season. Hindsight a a wonderful thing but you could just as easily say the same about Rose who could play in a multitude of positions. I am surprised our signings recently have mostly been attack minded when defensively seems to be the area of greatness weakness but Bennett wasn't good enough last season.

Oh no I dont think thats a good return , especially in his later years his goals seem to have dried up. Is this another signed just because he scored against us.FFS! I will hope he improves. :- )

You're right. We should be splashing out on someone like Messi or Aguero.

If only they would sign for a maximum of £2,000 a week and their current clubs would be so kind to let them leave on a free transfer.

Only 8 starts for Davies. 21 starts for Bunney.

Absolutely. Bunney also scored more goals than Andrew last season, but I know which one I'd rather have in my team. You can make statistics suit any argument if you really want to.

Yep. Aguero missed two pens. He's lost his scoring touch.

Incoming transfer news on 12:24 - Aug 18 with 1832 views | electricblue | People seem to think that the signing of Davies is the end for Bunney. Is that the same as Logan signing and its the end of Lillis ! As i dont hear people pushing Lillis out of the club.. The signing of Davis is a squad strengthener.. Time will tell if he is better than Bunney and more agile the Andrew.. As with Logan signing perhaps it Diba on his way to a season long loan somewhere.
| My all time favourite Dale player Mr Lyndon Symmonds |

Lillie still has something to offer. A lot of people's patience has worn thin with Bunney.

Calvin has improved markedly since he joined us, but ultimately he still does not score enough goals.

In a way, that stat worries me more: why could an ex-Championship player not command a regular starting place in a L1 side? On the other hand, for those who distrust stats, he was Bradford's second (jointly) leading league goalscorer with those 5 goals.

Whilst in my previous reply I was concentrating on pointing out his championship credentials (at the expense of your pretty meaningless stat regarding respective performances last season in L1), the real question here is - why take issue with this signing of someone with proven skill when Hill has a long list of players who've underperformed elsewhere and rejuvenated their careers? Why Davies? Did you complain about COG, Hendo, Vincenti, etc?

Incoming transfer news on 14:40 - Aug 18 with 1516 views | SaxonDale | I think on paper it seems a promising signing. He's a player who seems to be rated by various fans of clubs he's previously played for and he's been involved in several high-fee moves so you would like to assume that there is certainly talent within him. It looks as though he had a few injury problems at Bradford last year but seems worth a punt. If you look at the last 2 seasons around this period Hilly has brought in Dawson and Mendez-Laing who both offered a clear increase in quality on what we already had in the squad so hopefully Davies can provide similar. I think we'll need to be patient as he's missed an entire preseason so it may well take a few months for him to get completely up to speed, however I'm more than happy for Andrew to carry on starting for now.
