Can’t believe they are happening tomorrow. Usually there are candidates boards in front gardens and piles of electoral literature on the door mat. This year, apart from a few boards from the Greens there are very few boards around. We have also had some leaflets from the Torys but not from anyone else. No one knocking on doors asking for votes. I don’t even know who the candidates are. Ok, it’s not as big a deal as a GE but it is still important. It is as if no one in this part of the world gives a ****.

They trust him, because he said he would get Brexit done and he did. Labour, amongst others, voted to uphold the referendum result and didn't. They lied on a massive issue, and didn't respect the will of their own voters. It's obvious why Boris has a massive 81 seat majority and Labour is vanishing. Time to accept the will of the people and they felt listened to, for once. Nobody cares about wall paper or words said in private. They wanted Brexit and are punishing Labour for not delivering / supporting their will. The antics in Parliament after a democratic vote, that they promised to uphold, will never be forgotten.

And Boris lied to get Brexit done and continues to lie about everything he is involved in but we are so much better off under them aren't we? Like Raab and the taking a knee, like Hancock and his tracing, the list is endless except people just don't get it do they
Maybe people should consider that charity begins at home so a silver spoon Toff who I would say has zero relatability to people of Hartlepool is to be trusted is he?
Dear oh dear some people really need to take a beat and you are just illustrating the issue

I guess as the saying goes you get the leader you deserve and like the uS and Trump we here are no better

Well the voters have spoken. Massive Tory rule across the country - Labour voters turning to Boris, one of the most successful leaders in history. Perhaps you ought to move countries, if you are finding hard to accept our will?

Conservatives also taking huges swathes of the country in local council elections. Massive Tory rule across the country. The opposition need to ask themselves why they are being "punished" and why Boris is one of the most popular leaders in our history.
[Post edited 7 May 2021 9:37]

The opposition aren’t being punished. It is much more complicated than that. People don’t like to admit that they are wrong, hence a number of Johnson supporters still arguing that somehow this joker is the right man to take this country forward. As I said before, Trump, although voted out, still managed to increase his vote. Many commentators said yesterday that Starmer has a mountain to climb and has only just started. One by election result doesn’t mean a thing, it is what happens at the next election that is important and that is what he needs to be judged on. As well as convincing the country that he is worth voting for he also has to convince many in his own party who will problem never forgive him for not being Corbyn.
A lady on Question Time (who isn’t a politician) made a very good point last night when they were discussing the likelihood of Hartlepool becoming Tory. Why on Earth is Johnson still getting away with the 127,000 plus deaths? Probably because he constantly blocks an independent public enquiry. It will happen eventually though and then he will have nothing to hide behind and perhaps people will finally understand what their votes have meant for this country.

So Labour seats (and councils) turning Tory for the very first time, is because new voters don't want to be wrong? How does that make any sense?

Call Boris a muppet if you like, but he is an extremely successful muppet! And very popular! And not just popular, Boris is changing the map, even in mining communities.

As for the deaths, who knows why. The people obviously dont blame Boris.

‘Boris getting away with 120,000+ deaths’. Getting away with, what nonsense. Uk is now about 14th in the list of deaths per capita, and we are a densely packed country. Were leaders of the other 13 countries with higher death rates ‘getting away with it’? That phrase is spiteful left wing bile and shows huge disrespect to the millions of NHS workers desperately working to minimise deaths.

Disappointed Labour supporters should look at their own party failings if they are ever to provide a strong opposition and have any chance to provide the next government.

i'm a Labour supporter and that's spot on, Starmer is way out of touch with many of his own party, let alone the rest of the electorate.

How after Hartlepool voted significantly for Leave in Brexit, could he put in a favoured candidate who was Remainer.

Oh the irony of this -

This is the reason why Labour have done so bad , they just blame everyone else but themselves. Soggy got it right , the people got it wrong , you muppet SoG's

Fair play to you. Labour will tear itself apart once again. Starmer at odds with his members and many MP's arguing for another Corbyn like extreme left wing figure, who failed so miserably. They just arn't getting it, and are only helping to bring about more support for Boris. Putting a remainer MP to stand in Hartlepool, again shows just how out of touch they are. They will never be elected again, unless they drastically change. In fact, they will probably split, splitting the votes and we will have Tory rule forever.

Corbyn very nearly got in in 2017, it was the likes of Starmer who forced him to follow a pro remain stance that cost us 2019 Election and the Hartlepool by-election IMO

its interesting that many of Corbyn's policies such as improved Broadband, dismissed as being extremist at the time, are now being pushed by Boris.

But brexit aside, just look at the the clear basic policies - should students get completely free tuition fee? I had to pay for mine. Is it not right to say that child benefit should rightly be given for 2 kids, but if you want more, pay for it yourself? You think the Labour policy of pay for unlimited kids is right? Or the policy of unlimted benefits etc. You think Labour's then policy 2019 of unlimited immigration is right, when so many working class people are saying they don't like it? Until Labour can understand and listen to valid views, they just won't get elected. Corbyn vs May was completely different. Boris is far more popular, clearly as he listened to brexit voters.

Some interesting thoughts on the demise of Boris on here

"One of the traits of narcissism is a total lack of empathy. Johnson has demonstrated that clearly with his pile of bodies comment. Hopefully the penny is beginning to drop. The longer he team aims in power the more he gives himself away. I think he has outlived his usefulness for the Tory party. They will leave him in place to carry the can for the Covid debacle and dump him before the next General Election."

"We will eventually get to an 'anyone but Boris' position, but we are not there yet.
And likely the Tory Party will get rid as soon as that moment comes."

"Interesting to see Johnson lose it at PM’s questions yesterday. Starmer is playing a long game with him and using his experience as a barrister and a “drip, drip” approach to build up a picture of who and what Johnson really is. If he is still in post by the time of the next election, most people with any hint of intelligence will see him for what he really is - a self serving, self important egotist without a shred of integrity, talent, empathy or respect for his position. This is why I think the party will ditch him sooner or later but I very much doubt that we shall see him in the frame for a second term."

I like that Starmer is playing the long game , were these election results part of his plan ? Lets put a Remainer ex-MP who got booted out of his last seat for his Brexit views and put him as a candidate for one of the hardest Brext seats in the country , the people will know we listen to them then, surely they wont think we have total contempt for their views and they will see they got it wrong.

I really find it hard to believe they did this , what on earth were they thinking.

Of course it isn’t part of the plan to lose votes, but Starmer has not been the Labour leader for long and the country has been locked down for a great deal of his time. There is still a long way to go and the opposition have a lot of work to do, but that would be the case even if Labour had held Hartlepool. Let’s see how things are when the “vaccine bounce” is over and the economic effects of the pandemic impact on the low income bracket.

The opposition aren’t being punished. It is much more complicated than that. I agree that things are more complicated than most people want to think about. But people are voting Tory because they don't like to admit they are wrong? People putting up with Boris because he won't kick off an inquiry into Covid deaths? I'd venture that there isn't an adult in the country that doesn't think that 127,000 deaths is completely unacceptable, Tory supporters included. There is a significant proportion that probably think that the government have always been behind the curve and reacted too slow when things have got bad, and been too willing to take the brakes off when things are getting better (foreign holidays being my pet beef). But the opposition have not demonstrated the semblance of a clue other than bleat after events have occured. People need the government to LEAD, and Labour, Libdems and Greens have not shown any capability in this, at local or national level, hence, they don't get the popular vote.

The real scandal is the complete c0ck up that the opposition parties have made of challenging the Tories since Gordon Brown got caught with his pants down and the cupboard bare. The left may loath Tony Blair, but he was a consummate politician who made a bad decision over Iran and the left of the labour party seized power for selfish rather than party benefit. But allowing Brown to continually raise taxes to pay for public sector jobs to massage the employment levels and inflate the economy wasn't enough for the dinasaurs.

If we end up with a ramshakle bunch of chancers running the country, it is because nobody is good enough to knock them down. Sad but true.

Well that just tells you how far we have come.

If it wasn't for the success of the vaccine rollout I doubt if the result would have been quite the same.

Why Boris appears to be held in such regard is beyond me.
Anyway they can just get on with it, I have had enough of stupid voting, just watch where it lands us because we are heading for a big wake up call.

Labour needs to return to its roots.
Corbyn and his friends were all over the place.
Starmer should have taken Boris to the cleaners,he tried but appears no one listened.

Listen in to some of the Hartlepool voters - they feel empowered that they were listened to (for once). Amongst other things, they said for years and years about undercutting of wages from foreign workers - nobody listened. They just got called racist. They voted 70 per cent for brexit. Whether you agree or not, it's what they wanted. Whilst Labour tried to stop their will, Boris delivered it within a few weeks. It's clear to me why Boris is so popular.

And Labour doesn't represent the average middle aged working man anymore. They talk about rights, minorities, "fairness to the world, wallpaper and the rest instead of jobs, the economy, marriage, stable family, crime, and the rest. A Labour whiney young women was even suggesting this morning that the Tories limit civil liberties because of the lockdown! Nobody is listening to such rubbish, it's so childish and makes them vote Tory all the more.

As a Labour voter all my life I can say they're goosed, too focused on feeling guilty and being all woke, they've taken the northern vote for granted for far far too long and this is the result, they won't come back now, the party tried to become patriotic and it looked hollow, false and desperate.
And what bellend put a pro EU candidate in a fiercely anti EU contest? This shows how far from reality they've come, too London, too woke, too afraid to offend.
They'll only improve if they put candidates up in areas that represents the areas feelings, like a pro EU candidate in a pro EU area and vice versa BUT the pro EU candidate has to understand they can not seek another referendum as they'll weaken the national viewpoint.
I voted leave, I vote Labour and I am a proud Brit who loves the Union flag, I know I am in the minority and that is one of the reasons Labour is screwed.

He who is silent and bows his head dies every time he does so. He who speaks aloud and walks with his head held high dies only once. —Giovanni Falcone
