In the hope that this thread if it expands remains sensible, but I've just heard that AH is now being "investigated" because he "blacked up" at a FANCY DRESS party in 2009!

I mean ffs, where are we going with all of this or am I just being completely ignorant? As a nipper I once went to a kiddies birthday party as an Indian (sorry, Native American) complete with tomahawk and mum made headdress so does that make me some kind of bad guy?

I really do wonder where this country is going, becoming a complete nanny state to the woke brigade

When are the liberal left actually going to have the courage to stand up to religions and cultures that are fascist, sexist, racist and tolerate all sorts of horrific deeds?
I'll take them seriously then until then they'll continue with the white man easy target, why don't feminists take on the Islamic faith? Why doesn't Islam take on China over the treament of Uighers?
Nah bollocks to that we'll expend all our energy on a statue......................

Easy targets and cowardice.

Save me your crocodile tears. Criticising liberals for not being liberal enough when really you’d prefer a bit more Islam bashing and for ‘the white man’ to be left alone.

He’s got a point though, UK comedians are pretty cowardly, and cringeworthily formulaic these days.

Give me a proper funny comedian like Dave Chapelle any day, who doesn’t give a f*ck who he offends. That’s the way comedy should be, not the usual bland material for sneering London based people called Cressida and sneering Dorset based people called Ian.

I'm criticising liberals for being cowards, hypocrites and appeasers.

Got nothing to do with race, that speaks volumes you bring that up, I speak out against all wrongs, you speak out against wrongs that would appear to further your agenda or ignore them.
Thankfully your race bashing is becoming a thing of the past, you're a dinosaur.

Nah, you and Bicester just struggle with an inclusive agenda, and don’t like white people being criticised. Even if they’re long dead and slave traders.

Yes that’s why I’ve cited a black comedian who takes the piss out of white people as my favourite!

Social history is only going in one direction. Universal suffrage, keeping children out of the workplace, equal rights for women, health and safety rights for workers, protections against discrimination against immigrants and people’s of different races, creeds and colours, legalisation of homosexuality, LGBT anti-discrimination laws. I could go on.

All of these advances have been achieved by ‘liberals’ and every step of the way there have been people opposed to the change. People protecting their vested interests, just plain stick in the muds and also, of course, outright racists etc.

All this anti-woke, anti-PC stuff is just the latest manifestation of the forces who are always there resisting these sort of changes.

Liberals and progressives aren’t the problem. Any rights you have worth talking about have been won by liberals.

So you can keep all your guff about cowardice and hypocrisy. Admit it, you just prefer things exactly as they are.

Lovely words but absolute bollocks, liberals didn't give us that, socialism did in the main.

Never confuse the two, who tried to retain such backward thoughts on progression?

Culture and religion.

The very thing the liberals won't tackle as they're afraid to take on minorities for fear of being called racist.

Rotherham, Oxford.

I want a society of light brown people not listening to imaginary things, class and society for me come before anything else, I'd rather have a tory than a liberal, the politics of concession.
How can a feminist who wants quite rightly equality and their pro choice stance not only allowed but respected compromise to right wing fascist religion and culture?

Answer that.

Couldn’t agree more Ian. Fortunately the world is making progress and you only have to look back at some of the tv programmes from the 70’s to see how far we have crawled out of the swamp in the last 50 years. Unfortunately because we are still relatively new at this Not Being An A Hole stuff there is plenty of stuff lying around on social media of people doing stuff years ago that they would dream of doing now. Perhaps we should just leave it there (if not illegal) and concentrate on getting it right now and in the future. I’m not talking about sweeping institutionally racist behaviour in places like the Met Police and Yorkshire CC under the carpet. That clearly needs to be exposed as dealt with. But silly behaviour at parties years ago being dragged up and thrown in people’s faces isn’t helpful. Jim Davidson and his ill made careers out of that sh it when we were younger and didn’t know any better.

You've made my point by bringing up the Met and YCC, the World is becoming more intolerant, authoritarian and fascist, you simply aren't capable of seeing it.

TV shows? All this means is a part of society has changed thankfully but religion and culture hasn't changed has it?

Has Judaism, Christianity or Islam changed?

Until we have the bollocks to take them on with their fascist ways nothing will change, its being taught in segregated schools, enclaves, the south doesn't really have them and I doubt you've been to any of them, sad, depressing and the multiculturism at its finest....

Your knowledge of social history is clearly very poor. I'd start with that if I were you. Understand that benefits that liberal ideals have brought and you might decide to wind your neck in a little.

As for the rest of your incoherent rant, I think I pass on trying to reply to that.

It’s odd isn’t it, you go onto most football forums and you will find some individuals who go out of their way to give any resident liberal a bashing. The world would be a far safer, healthier and pleasant place to live in if it were run by people of a liberal disposition.

Yes turning a blind eye to despots for fear of upset, de platforming whilst advocating free speech yet ignoring religious hatred, liberals accept political status quo and concede from within the framework, socialists look beyond that box type thinking.
Anyway what’s liberal about ignoring legitimate concerns?

What is your position on faith schools?

What is your position of the compatibility of faith, religious dogma alongside womens, lgbt+q rights and social justice?

What is you position of equality and freedom of speech? Lets take Rowling and her address being revealed by gender activists as its in the news today.

I'll look forward to squirming and non committed liberal wooly answers that mean little.

Lets try and keep this a discussion and not slagging individuals off, I think we all agree that moving forward and trying to eradicate racism and homophobia etc is a good thing, the issue is the historical persecution of people in the public eye who are being picked out for acts committed 20 years ago.

All that does is draw up battle lines, yes what went on over the year whether it was slavery or the general racism prevalent in the UK in the 1970's should not be forgotten, lessons should be learned but we will never get rid of it if we are dividing rather than uniting, look at America it is becoming even more "Us & Them" than it was 10 years ago, it could happen here where we do not have the same issues as over there.

For my part I feel that the Romans and Scandinavians are getting off scot free for invasions and atrocities in this country

There is a point about time, but 20 years ago wasn’t the 1970s, it was 2001. It’s not as if attitudes were so much different then than now.

I certainly agree though that individuals shouldn’t be judged for all time by the worst mistakes of their youth, just as entire religions should not be judged by the actions of their most extreme members.

There aren’t too many statues to Romans and Vikings that need pulling down.

Hopefully those who made silly mistakes 20 years ago have learned from them and moved forward. If so, depending what they were, I don’t see the point in digging them up and dragging people through the dirt now. What I do find odd is the way some people still think that the world is the same place as it was in the last century and judge it as they would in the 70’s. Apart from them and the likes of Jacob Rees-Mogg I think most reasonable people understand what things like taking the knee and not being an apologist for those still stuck in the last century are all about. Being “woke” or “liberal” seems to attract those who seem to have a problem with treating others as you would be treated yourself. Or to put it more succinctly, if you can’t be “woke” at least don’t be an a**hole.

I watched the fabulously sexist Benny Hill Show on telly the other night - the first time it's been shown in over 20-years. It was funny/entertaining back then and just as entertaining now. It may not be very PC or sit comfortably with the feminists in 2021 of course... but there will be an "OFF" button on the TV remote for anyone offended.

I saw some clips on YouTube. It didn’t offend me but although I thought it was hilarious to see a chubby middle aged man chasing scantily dressed young women around in the 70’s, it just seems a bit pervy now. There is a reason why no one makes these programmes any more. People now find that stuff creepy, not funny.
