| Palace Match Thread on 22:20 - Dec 15 by dirk_doone | If Ralph really has to sub our best forwards, I'd rather see youngsters like Olaigbe and Watts come on than Long and Walcott. I'm sure that nearly all Saints fans thought like I did Oh no, when they saw Long and Walcott replacing Broja and Tella. |
Walcott ffs! Why? Again we fail to win when he is brought on! 3 pts given away after leading AGAIN Zero improvement

| Palace Match Thread on 09:08 - Dec 16 by MytchettSaint | Fed up of hearing “we should be happy with a point in a game we thought we’d lose” That completely sums up the mentality of this club. The game was there for the taking and once again we didn’t. |
Those subs ruined any chance of 3 points.
| Palace Match Thread on 09:44 - Dec 16 with 748 views | saint901 | I've only seen the game on MOTD and can't really comment on players or tactics or strategies in any detail. The posts here though do rather expose the fickle nature of Saints fans. Pre match the overriding tone of the posts was that Palace would be too energetic for us, our injury list would be a telling factor, certain players (who some posters love to hate) were a liability, RH was out of his depth. All around gloom and doom before a ball is kicked. Post match it's all about how we again drew from a winning position, how two late subs showed a lack of ambition or nous, how we could (should?) have won. From what I saw on MOTD we scored a couple of decent goals in a period when we were playing well. Their first goal should have been prevented and their second was a scrappy effort just as easily missed. Pre match I would have taken a point. That's what we got and we move on. Saints fans don't have to be consistent and there are structural issues with the team, the tactics and ownership that need fixing but let's at least acknowledge that this is a point won rather than two lost? | | | |

Walcott might as well not be on the pitch as he just chases shadows. But, in many ways, Long is worse because he acts as an extra defender for the opposition. He stops our attacks. Every time he gets the ball he either gives it to an opposition player or puts it out of play so they can have a goal kick or throw in.

The difficulty for me is that I am no longer seeing each game in isolation. I see more of the same, be that the same lack of inspiration from the manager, the same flakiness on the pitch, or just the same issue of having a lead and losing it. In the round, yesterday's game on its own was probably a good point, but the wider context is that it was another 2 points added to the mountain of points lost in recent times. Winning positions in 4 of the last 6 games and three points to show for it. (And hammerings in the other two). And that's just the very recent stats. We score very few goals - less than one a game so far this season - so getting a lead is not easy for us. We can't afford to keep throwing them away.

Agree but let’s not gloss over Djnepos contribution when he come on….

You could argue that it was a point gained from a losing position. Not unhappy with a point at Palace and in the plus side not many teams have had the better of us over 90 minutes. We just need to find a way of turning draws into wins.

Yeah but that’s because our squad isn’t always good enough to take the points when available

I think that if Tella and Broja had stayed on the pitch we would have had more of a chance of 3 points.

After he limped off on Saturday, I wasn't expecting him to feature at all last night, so to get an hour or so from him was a boost to the team and to the fans that made the journey. Tella played really well and was particularly effective on the break, attacking their defence with skill and pace. Both players had to be taken off - both were knackered and Broja was carrying a knock, so best to take him off than risk further damage. As Adams and A Armstrong were both injured and Ely and S Arm seem to be out of favour, who else do we have, other than Djenepo, Walcott and Long ? Long did alright, got a (weak) header on target, held it up well, won a free kick or 2 and wound Zaha up. Walcott only had 10 mins, so couldn't influence the game in any way. Djenepo was truly awful. One good pass to Long, but the rest of the time his positioning was terrible and his touch in and around the Palace box was embarrassingly bad. We did well to get a (deserved) point !!

'who else do we have' Well there were 7 other subs better than those two. I could understand Broja coming off but Tella didn't look knackered to me. Elyounoussi would have been an a better option and any one from the other 6.
