Luton humbling highlights scale of Critchley’s task — Report on 21:36 - Dec 30 by nix | Just a thought though Dave I wonder if it looked worse in the ground than on TV. You get a lot more idea of lack of movement off the ball and how few times our players got in their box when watching it live. It's harder to see that on TV as they focus a lot more on close ups of the player with the ball. |
It was sh it watching it at the ground….

thats quite possibly true, I always prefer being at a game but watching at home it didn't feel as bad as many who were there have said it was
Luton humbling highlights scale of Critchley’s task — Report on 01:11 - Dec 31 with 1903 views | Antti_Heinola | Personally can't believe the stick Tim gets. Utterly, utterly baffling. 19 yo kid who has been good all season makes some poor decisions, makes some mistakes. He's 19. Got to say I didn't seem him pull out of any challenges, but maybe I'm not seeing what others do. Our bias against loan players has reached insane proportions and if a player has a bad game it's immediately 'they want to go back.' So much extrapolation and guesswork passed off as fact. Most if not all teams in this league rely on a few loans. Birmingham battered us a few weeks back - mainly due to their loan signings. I think Tim has been tremendous for us. And, unlike a lot of the 'players we own', manages to be fit to play every week. Against Luton he's asked to play a different role as a more defensive player in a two, and people go mad at his errors. Find it really depressing.

Luton humbling highlights scale of Critchley’s task — Report on 08:10 - Dec 31 with 1745 views | nix | I almost always agree with you Antti but on Tim I don't. I'm not intending to scapegoat the lad or blame him every week but I just disagree with the eulogies he'd been consistently getting. He's definitely got tons of talent, yes and a bright future. But the issue with loan players is we're not getting the benefit long term of their future improvements. So in some ways I'm thinking that a particular player we own may not be perfect but they're learning, and we'll get the long term benefit. We need our loan players to be contributing every week, not showing their potential. I can't think that he's been amazing every week because he just doesn't seem to me to be doing the basics that I look for as well as he could. To me he doesn't seem to be marking up in the area, making clearances, winning his duels, showing for the ball when we're under pressure coming out of defence, creating big chances etc. I often hardly notice him for long periods. He's not our only problem, undoubtedly, but he's not the amazing contributor either, and I've been baffled at people singing his praises every week because he does a showy dribble once a match that hasn't led to a goal or an assist. We've got lots of problems that need to be sorted and one of them is that we need every single player putting themselves on the line and busting a gut. He's one of those that doesn't appear to be doing that. It's the least we need and because of his talent I want to see it happen, otherwise he's not going to be tremendous in my view.

All of this, again. While he does the odd eye-catching run, his over-all affect on the game is minimal, IMHO. It seems we're developing him without too much reward. When he first started playing, I was one of those thinking, "This lad will play for England". Now, I'm really not so sure. It could be that he's not what we need, and we aren't what he needs. I would swop him for a fit Dom Ball tomorrow.
Luton humbling highlights scale of Critchley’s task — Report on 09:54 - Dec 31 with 1641 views | NorthantsHoop | This is how I feel Clive, for the first time since coming back to watching Rangers 9 years ago we look a right state on the pitch. The last 2 home games have been abysmal no pattern, gaping holes in midfield and comfortable victories for Burnley and Luton. My concern with the Critchley appointment is the length of it, three and a half years and at the moment he is not providing us with a lot of hope. My suspicion is that we limp on with him it spirals downwards and land up sacking and giving him the compensation we got for Beale, hope I am proved wrong. Probably written off the Sheffield game but a real banana skin for his tenure is Fleetwood away, if we lose that well who knows.
Luton humbling highlights scale of Critchley’s task — Report on 10:16 - Dec 31 with 1608 views | 1JD | Tim Iroegbunam is meant to be a defensive midfielder, but he doesn’t work hard enough, close down players fast enough, track runners, make tackles, and compete for headers. Compare to Field who does all of this and more. He is fairly comfortable in possession, and he is excellent at beating a man or two and ball carrying, but he doesn’t do it enough, and it rarely amounts to anything to justify inclusion for this skill alone. It seems to me he is neither a defensive centre midfielder, a box to box midfielder, or an attacking midfielder. Or an effective all rounder. And that’s the problem; overall I’m not sure what he brings to the team.

one thing he brings to the team is being fit and available, something Amos and Johansen are unable to do, I find it bizarre that he's getting stick. Had a poor game the other night but wasn't alone | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I don't think you can blame people for not being fit, and it's a low bar to say don't give him any criticism because he's on the team sheet. I don't think he's particularly getting massive stick, have a look at Kakay or Dozzell for that. My personal comments aren't just about the last match but over time. Not blaming him for our poor run but he's part of it. I don't think he's the only issue, there are loads but I just think his lack of whole hearted commitment allows some criticism. Why should he get away with less than anyone else?

Luton humbling highlights scale of Critchley’s task — Report on 19:38 - Dec 30 by Northernr | Yeh the frustration with Laird is the microcosm of my frustration with the team. Obviously it's the Championship and everybody beats everybody else and all that qualifying mitigation, but look at Laird at Preston last week, and then look at him against Cardiff. Look at him, and the team, against Watford, and then look at them last night. One week he's Kyle Walker, the next week he's not even somebody Kyle Walker would trust to clean his pool. |

True, but then doesn't that blow a hole in most of the conspiracy theories? IF, and as I've said before I'm not in to conspiracy theories, but IF players are STILL? upset about Beale, want to be off in Jan, go back to parent clubs and are not "at it", why doesn't that happen every week/every game? I'm with Dave on the general pint of players not trying, anywhere, tbh, - think its a bit of a football myth - but for all my "its not that, its not this" rhetoric, hard to put my finger on the reasons behind the prolonged poor form.

Not a chance of getting Eze money for him but I'd be speaking to Bournemouth who have just come into money and see if they are interested |

He also turned in an unacceptable performance against Burnley. He lacks desire and hunger. As a supposed defensive centre midfielder, that’s a real problem. For me he’s not contributing enough to justify his continued selection.

There's not a professional manager who will sign for less than 3 years, so not sure you can blame the club for that one - its the market.

and he's not a 'defensive midfielder' - where did that come from? More than his languid style, its lack of end product - goals/assists which I think is a more valid criticism.

Luton humbling highlights scale of Critchley’s task — Report on 14:24 - Dec 31 with 1318 views | bosh67 | It's interesting to think that last season we had Andre Gray on loan (10 goals in 28 games, many not even full games), Charlie Austin (13 goals in 55) and then Lydon Dykes (10 goals in 37) as the three main strikers and now we have Lyndon (6 goals in 21), Sinclair Armstrong (0 goals in 7) and McCauley Bonne (0 goals in 6). As Kevin Gallen has said many times whilst starting to bleed from the nose through bashing his face against a wall, it's not rocket science to see where one of the main problems is. 25 games played this season and 6 goals scored by our forward line, well, just Dykes really. Add to that getting shot of Yoann Barbet who seemed to be able to play even when his head fell off and he'd lost all his blood against Salter Clark who seems like he's a sick note on just 11 games and Balogun, who I like but who has played just 9 games apparently this season and again you start to see where the wheels are coming off. Add poor old Amos to that (11 games this season) and Stefan Johansen (not even sure he's made 11 games) and you start to see how much weaker this squad is than last season's. Beale got something out of them when he came here but we all know that he managed to destroy that and inflicted a lot of harm on the current squad in the process. I don't envy Critchley. Young and sometimes injury prone loan players probably not knowing if they are coming or going, youth players not really coming through, a side bereft of mature leadership on the pitch for most games, a star player who only has one hamstring and we don't know which one that is, a team going through a rough patch, a lack of confidence, a deep set mentality issue etc etc and you see the scale of the issues. How does he solve it? Unless he gets Armstrong up to speed and we sell off Bonne some how and get a few lower league strikers in it's difficult to see where the goals are coming from. Willock looks miles off being fit, Chair can't carry midfield without Johansen, Field is good but he isn't a playmaker, Dozzell, although blessed with skill is wildly inconsistent and again you start clutching at straws. Right now I think we have to look at the lower leagues, take a punt on Macaulay Langstaff before Bristol City, Coventry, Luton, Boro all circle to buy him in a week. Or find several others at lower levels who will come. I am not even sure we could afford another Andre Gray level loan, as good as that turned out to be, even if he did get slagged off every week.

After everything is said and done - this is the biggest issue 6 goals from a forward line at half way point is gunna catch up with you We’re not going up this year - we’re not going down (mockers gods be kind) I’d invest as much playing time in Armstrong as possible - 20 games and we’d start to see whether he is the messiah or just a naughty boy

Considering the way we finished the last half of last season, how could the DOF and owners let us go into this season with just Dykes, Bonne and Armstrong as our ‘strikeforce’? It has to be the p1ss weakest forward line in the division. How did they think the season would pan out with those three leading the line? It’s truly baffling.

So, on 20 October were you saying the same thing? At that time we were leading the competition and had scored 23 goals in 15 league matches. Only Burnley (25) and Sheffield United (24) had scored more. Yes, the goals were spread around, but we were scoring goals for fun and with, unbelievably, the same three in the forward line of Dykes, Bonne and Armstrong (though some may consider Roberts another). At that time, my guess is that the powers to be were thinking they had the right formula to score enough goals to get us forward.

100 % This. The same applies 100% for Laird, who must be one of our 3 or 4 best players overall so far this season. I can only think of Tim, Field and Dieng who come close. Edit: I should add Dunne into players who come close. [Post edited 31 Dec 2022 17:00]

But as OzExile says, when Dunne and Dickie play together back there, they're very, very prone to just knocking the ball very slow, very safe, very pedestrian between each other until all other options other than Dieng have gone. JCS does at least pass the fcking thing forwards. Laird has been our best player, and one of our worst, sometimes within the same week. Utterly unplayable at Preston last Saturday, completely anonymous in this game.

Also on that note and we have mentioned it before but some of our players IE. Kakay and amos who are behind these loanees what are they going to think? Why are they going to sign a contract extension that we as fans want them to do when we play a loan player ahead of them? We as fans will be the first to call them out for being money grabbing mercenaries a la Manning etc when in truth they've been badly handled and the pathway has been blocked - even if we think they aren't up to it!
