The first £1m footballer, Trevor Francis has died of a heart attack at his villa in Spain aged 69. I remember him well, a classy striker on his day and also remember the banner headlines in the late 70’s when he became the first £1m player - I remember thinking at the time where is this all going to end? At the time £1m seemed such a huge amount to pay for a player, to put it in perspective, my Gran’s house in Southampton was worth about £40k at the time! Little did any of us who can remember that landmark transfer have any idea what money would do to our beloved game over 40 years down the line….

Whilst Bellingham was born in Stourbridge so fairly local to Birmingham , Trevor Francis was born in Plymouth and grew up there joining Birmingham as an apprentice at 16, although he had been on schoolboy forms as they were then called for those who had not left school and signed full time |  |
