The Price OF A Pint 21:06 - Apr 4 with 841 viewsSaintNick

Cost of pint £1.63 (inc Vat)
Wastage allowance 0.28p (in Vat)
Staff costs £1.76
Rent & utilities £1.39
Beer Gas 0.11p
Total £5.17

Total profit per pint £0.83

I'm not sure on this, are we saying that the average bar staff paid say £70 for a 5 hour shift will pour only 40 pints in that time, ie only 8 pints an hour

Are you saying that the sale price is £6?

As in £5.17 plus £0.83?

If so, you would need to reduce it by £1, as that would be VAT to pay over to HMRC.

Although VAT of £0.32 could be re-claimed on the cost of the pint sold plus wastage.

Which would adjust the profit to £0.15 by my maths.

It’s OK, the missus is at a Weller gig tonight, so I am OK to talk shite on here…..

I can’t get the profit to equate to what you say.

Maybe show me your workings in Blackburn 😂

£5.17 is the total cost to the pub including all costs including staff etc, so they make 0.83 profit per pint

But you have to strip out all the VAT.

Where the pub suffers is they won’t reclaim any VAT on the staff costs, which are a large part of the cost.

Whereas the whole of their income attracts VAT.

Most of that 83p will be paid over to HMRC.

The true profit to the pub is a lot less.

I guess to go back to your original point, at your average non-Wetherspoon boozer, maybe each person is only pouring 8 pints an hour each on an average shift.

Guess there are busy and quiet times on each day.

I have an involvement in the hospitality sector through my work, and we find most people are only drinking when they are eating.

Times have changed, you don’t get many people going out to a pub for an 8-pint session any more.

The decline of the great British pub is sad to see. There was a time when we had pubs that were all different full of characters and were the hub of the community. Now they are either shut or closing down leaving us with pubs that are the same wherever you go. Shiny theme bars or Wetherspoons in the cities and if you drive out somewhere a lot of old village pubs are boarded up with To Let signs. It’s modern Britain but it’s a bit shite.

In the pub I’m going to tomorrow, the Cheppy on County Road, they don’t have a set price for a pint. When you order one pint, you had in a fiver and get a couple of quid back, it’s a tenner when you ask for three and five to six pints you will need a twenty pound note and the change varies not just from barmaid to barmaid*, but from the same barmaid depending on nothing in particular.

It’s cash only and is always a source of amusement.

* are we allowed to say barmaids now?
