| Ashes thread on 07:34 - Dec 17 by GaryBannister86 | They were terrible overs but I don't think it was deliberate! Reminds me of my playing days and absymal bowling when the skip would say "pitch it up" - yeah I know that mate I am not deliberately chucking in long hop after long hop. Decent day for us on that track - brilliant catch by Crawley and if Brook could have held on to Khawaja could have been even better. Disappointing lack of intent in last two overs but I know it was hot. Get them out for 350 (not a given with Starc still there) and we could be one decent batting display away from actually making a game of it. |
Gary I see the problem there…. ‘and we could be one decent batting display away from actually making a game of it’ It looks a belter for batting but will anyone apply themself for long enough to get in and score like Carey did ? And tire their bowlers out for once….keeping everyone in the sun for a day plus…. I bloody hope so….but Bob Hope is loitering with intent again.

Ha! Even hotter forecast tomorrow, bat for two days and we are in amongst it. Sadly, I think there is more chance of Nardi coming off his line. Especially as we are now in the classic muddled thinking mode and I can see us going into our shells and being about 50-2 off 30 overs going nowhere. Find some balance.....

If England bat well for 2 days and get a nice lead it will be interestiong but do think our lack of spinner is going to cost us, game looks made for Lyon in the second innings

Very true regarding muddled thinking. Of all the grounds and pitches we'd be playing on, this was always going to be the most appropriate for our attacking game. But I agree with you, I worry we're going to retreat into a more defensive mindset and not apply pressure to their bowlers and come up short. Vital not to let Lyon hold down an end, with one of the other 4 quicks just rotating. We need to milk him and keep the scoreboard ticking. Cummins only just back and Stark, as well as he's bowled, has looked to be breathing a bit heavy once into a longer spell. 40+ heat tomorrow, make sure you apply pressure and don't let Lyon hold down an end. We have a good chance of winning if we do that.

Exactly. I'm not holding my breath. And being England we'll probably struggle to bowl them out in the morning. Can't believe Carse didn't get dropped, Atkinson was a bit unfortunate. And rather than grasp his second chance he just seems to have got worse. The spinner situation is a shambles, and clearly they realise they've fckd up with Bashir. Can't wait for the tour to end. Ditch Key and McCullum and try and get some adults back in the room. But then this is the ECB we're talking about.

Exactly. Bazball batting has a time and a place and it needs to be reigned in of course during a match situation, which is what we have been getting so wrong. It doesn't mean we should do some 1990s batting tomorrow. Cummins, Starc, Lyon, Boland will all have some jaffas in them at some point even on this track. As ever, it is the balance, which we just can't find for love nor money at the moment. "Take the game to them but don't take any risks" - the old cricket conundrum. I really fear we have muddled ourselves completely. Hope not.

Struggling to understand this. From what I can tell the snicko used in this series was selected by the TV broadcaster. not the ICC? So the ICC basically has no responsibility in choosing the system which plays a critical part in decision making during a game? Is that not like FIFA outsourcing goal line tech to the BBC? I'm thinking surely that's not right, how can Australia use a different system to what we have, surely, international sport, the same system should be used by all teams, which judging by the success of this series, shouldn't be the Aussie system!

Didn’t one of our players get given out in the last test even though the frames on the tv and the stump mic didn’t match up?

Yes - and also, we have neutral umpires these days. What's the nationality of the people operating Snicko? I am sure they just operate on a fair basis, but "Chose the wrong audio"...open to subterfuge, surely? Clearly we are only 2-0 down because of Aussie tricks. No other reason.

I’m out here and it was ‘kin Hot today. Experts were saying “win the toss, bat & it’s a 500+ track”, so I’m happy to get 8 wickets. Tomorrow is a big day. Hotter, 39c forecast. England need a Big day.

I’m so glad they take “full responsibility”! Did no one involved in it think it looked “a little odd” when the pictures, snicko and the sounds were played at same time and shown over and over again in replays?

We are 2-0 down because we haven’t played well enough, but we need a bit of luck too.We didn’t get that today with the ludicrous decision. Maybe our media should blank his name out of the paper like their pathetic press did with Stuart Broad.

My guess is they took the readings from the stump mic at the wrong end when synching with the video. Cant see how the left or right stump at the same end would make enough difference to the evidence. Regardless, Carey knew he was out - you could see it clearly in his reaction to the appeal. Had Rhys been an English player, the Aussies would have been all over him. He could have walked and probably should have. It would have helped with his redemption a little. Alternatively we could have got him out much earlier….he's been playing well this series. His keeping is excellent too / much better all round than Smith - so far.
