| Paul Smyth - Social Media Abuse 13:33 - Jan 2 with 8092 views | Benny_the_Ball | The club today released a statement condemning social media abuse of Paul Smyth and his family on Instagram. https://www.qpr.co.uk/news/202 It beggars belief that a player who gives his all and has just signed a contract extension is subjected to such treatment. Hopefully the perpetrator will be identified and dealt with. https://www.qpr.co.uk/news/202 | | | | |

| Paul Smyth - Social Media Abuse on 13:44 - Jan 2 with 4123 views | Northernr | There's a cohort of our online support who absolutely detest Smyth to weird levels, but the messages he's received go beyond that into proper mental illness. Unfortunately there's a lot of it about. In life and internet and society in general, but at QPR in particular there is definitely an unhinged weirdo or two within our midst who get off on anonymous hate campaigns via email and DM. I've been receiving stuff like this for the last couple of years. Dozens of them... And I'm not the only one from the podcast/website circuit who's getting this stuff either. Always deeply personal and designed to cause maximum hurt and upset. | | | |

Tall poppy syndrome. If I were you, I'd view these messages as a sign that you're doing something right. Difficult I know but such hate campaigns are usually driven by envy.

| Paul Smyth - Social Media Abuse on 14:03 - Jan 2 with 3907 views | Blue_Castello | Truly baffling why anybody would dislike Smyth, he's a true work horse on the pitch, one of our only wingers who understands that you need to support the full back. The same week where he signs a new contract and everyone who posts on LFW seems very pleased, the person posting this abuse is a total loser and let's hope he's banned very soon by the club, that's if he even attends games. | | | |

The attacks on police in Holland on New Years Eve were apparently orchestrated on SM. it's not right that people whose minds haven't developed beyond childhood stage get targeted by online nutters.

So sorry to hear that you receive such vile stuff. You and your team are providing a fantastic service to QPR fans - a service which demands a great deal of effort - and you do so with balance and self-awareness. Thank you!

Mouth-breathing fcktards for whom the touch of a woman costs £20 and takes place behind a fcking skip, after which they go back to their Mum's spare room, open their Fray Bentos and take out their miserable excuse for a life on anyone they feel they might be able to hurt. I cannot despise them enough.

| Paul Smyth - Social Media Abuse on 14:47 - Jan 2 with 3490 views | Phildo | it seems worse in QPR internet land this season- real antagonism out there. Grown men behaving badly not an example to the younger ones who are likely to post idiotic stuff from time to time. That is truly horrible Northern by the way. Musk's algorithm has made it all worse everywhere but it still takes a human to act the c@nt to do this sort of stuff. I don't post much anymore because of it. Best to remember always that it takes someone with a very small penis to conduct warfare from behind a keyboard. | | | |

I'd prefer they were identified, then given the choice of a public apology, with a lengthy ban or legal action.

| Paul Smyth - Social Media Abuse on 15:02 - Jan 2 with 3362 views | Boston | And annuver fing - we only recently had a thread on this board requesting people to list the QPR players they most 'despised'. I'm not the greatest at the use of English, but I do know that you're only a heartbeat away from falling into the same category as Smyth's abusers if you adopt a mentality of hate toward someone. Nightmare when your dad's having a go! At my end I was on the end of horrendous abuse from someone online a number of years ago. I offered to meet them to have a face to face chat and if they still felt the same way I'd deck them there and then. Strangely I never heard from them again. | |

I don’t think a public apology is enough for that level of personal abuse.

I don't think being chained to the railings of a North Sea oilrig and used as a screaming human jizzjar by two hundred great big hairy-backed bastards in the middle of the most violent thunderstorm the world has ever seen is enough but I've been known to overreact.

| Paul Smyth - Social Media Abuse on 16:10 - Jan 2 with 2822 views | stainrods_elbow | Abusiveness is endemic in the culture, catalysed by the anonymity of social media, which is a completely different thing from sharpness, surliness, edge, or a streak of malice. And it's hardly alien to this supposedly civilised message board either, as I know from my own experience with the usual suspects on here. I would agree that, nine times out of ten, it's driven by herd mentalists who lack self-esteem, envy one one's resilience, intelligence and sense of values, and, more often than not, a sign that one is doing something right, i.e. living under one's own star. Personally, it's water of a duck's back to me, unless it's someone who's earned my respect or whom I care about. Even then, what counts is to be true to oneself. [Post edited 2 Jan 16:11]

Being mentally unwell does not correlate with individuals that would definitely do such a thing. In my experience, as having suffered poor mental health myself and working in support roles helping people who are mentally suffering, would say the cases where people start being nasty, vicious and horrifically manipulative like this, are extremely rare. Perhaps, only a small percentage more than a person who does not suffer their own mental torment. Its why mental illness is still much misinterpreted and treated by those without insight and empathy as to how people suffer with diagnosed conditions. The person that has done this to Smythie and to you to Clive, also. There is no other word for it, they are evil, without morals and a criminal. But absolutely not, would the great majority who suffer with their mental health do this in anyways much like the rest of society, as a whole. Hope the individuals concerned get locked up, to consider about the impact of their awful actions and words. Clearly they have enough insight to consider that they can get away with this and subsequently enjoy their notoriety. But its not right or helpful to call out this person as mentally ill as a given. That kind of belief sets back anti mental health stigma campaigns about more understanding mental ill health, by a couple of decades or so. Hope the perpetrator gets their come tuppence as soon as. The police are particularly poor at cracking down on these incidents, but in reality this is a police matter and if there were deterrents people would not do it. [Post edited 2 Jan 16:19]
