| My team to play at Fratton and beyond 11:59 - Jan 18 with 1310 views | PatfromPoole | Pretty much a copy and paste from the "Can we stay up?" poll thread. I guess the new keeper is going to have to play; jury still out on him though. We need to revert to 4-4-1-1. Manning has to go. He is incapable of defending, and Welington is little better. I would play Jack Stephens at left-back; he has done it a number of times before, including the play-off final and in a few games in the Prem. This then gives Eckert the three tallish players he wants at the back. Bree at right-back. Roerslev isn't good enough and is too weak. Harwood-Bellis and Wood as the 2 CB's. Though I have severe doubts about both of them. They are simply the least bad options we have. Shea Charles and Bragg in central midfield. Downes can do one. I'd happily see him never play for the club again, as with Manning. Scienza and Fellows out wide. Armstrong behind Stewart as our attack. I actually think that team could get a result at Fratton. | |

Every transfer window since Sport Republic took over, they've made the team worse. They've never considered teambuilding as a priority, but are attracted to any little attacking midfield player who they think they can sell for a profit. We've ended up with a squad full of them, with no decent goalkeeper or centre forward ( the 2 most important positions in a team). We also lack a midfield ball winner and full-backs, which every team we play uses to their advantage to beat us. It's a lesson in how not to build a successful team. [Post edited 18 Jan 13:05]

Absolutely.. We have a team with no leadership or experience to go forward with. Like I’ve said previously, we need a leader who knows football. Unfortunately I can’t see SR making such a wise move. [Post edited 18 Jan 13:22]

He'll be a top quality defender but he needs to play in a better team to get his England career back on track. He knows that and I'm sure his father-in-law is reminding him. You could see in his one England appearance how he rose to the occasion with better players around him. We should have gone for the Ukrainian centre back, Talovierov, when we saw how well he played in Plymouth's FA Cup win over Liverpool. He's just very grateful to be away from a war zone, even playing for Stoke in the Championship. [Post edited 18 Jan 14:38]

| My team to play at Fratton and beyond on 15:37 - Jan 18 with 908 views | SNPMT | You need a mix of brains, brawn and talent to succeed in the Championship - Saints have some talent, but... Dumb players who lack physicality and commitment. Nathan Wood is simply too stupid and soft to play at this level. Downes is too stupid, as he proves time and again. Manning stopped running after giving the ball away, gesturing at Quarshie (I guess) when you can see by the replay that Manning, had he put the effort in, could have gotten to the eventual goalscorer right around the time he received the ball. No serious club can play Manning at the back. Dumb coaches - what is the point of crossing in the air to Armstrong. As we saw in the match, even a perfect cross that clears the defenders will be too high for Armstrong. Where is the news on Bree? Loan over on the 17th. And, I'd play Charlie Taylor on the left, ahead of anyone else in the squad. | | | |

At West Brom on loan, isn't he? I would recall him if we could.

Ya, I know. Wealth of PL experience and not good enough for the muppets at Saints.

“Nathan Wood is simply too stupid and soft to play at this level.” Everyone was raving about him not long back after some really good performances so this is not true. Bree has just returned from his loan at Charlton .

| My team to play at Fratton and beyond on 17:28 - Jan 18 with 702 views | reggaesaint | I like this line up Pat. It is hideous playing at Fratton and we need some strong characters physically and mentally to withstand the abuse. Despite his limitations, I agree that Jack Stephens is a good shout as he will not be intimidated and is a good communicator. Hopefully, James Bree will be back too. We simply cannot risk playing five at the back as we will get overrun (again) in midfield. We need at least four points from six this week, hopefully six. COYRs 😇 | | | |
| My team to play at Fratton and beyond on 17:33 - Jan 18 with 694 views | Monksway | Whilst some things vary in terms of player preferences, the basic themes are the same again and again. Defenders that can stop crosses and centre backs that command their area. Leadership and a consistent baxk four... Not five or three. A first choice physical centre forward. This has to be the minimum in this window if we are to stay up. Bree back at RB, new physical Centre back to partner THB. Wellington, Stephens or Jelert at LB NOT Manning. Charles back holding in midfield and a new centre forward. Armstrong, Robinson, Azaz, Fellows, Scienza and Matzuki are fine as attacking midfielders/ wingers. Jelert and Bragg are ok to balance Charles but without those two additions I can't see us turning this around.. | | | |

You are right the Manning mistake was bad, but he could and should have made amends by running back and putting in a saving tackle. He has cost us other goals this season and Charlie Taylor would be an easy upgrade. Quarshie also not up to this level, that is also becoming clear and Wood also not bright I agree. Despite all his faults Cpn Jack with THB looking our best option at CB. With Jellert or Bree at RB allowing Fellows to play where he can hurt the opposition.

| My team to play at Fratton and beyond on 10:46 - Jan 19 with 312 views | MattFinish | I'm more or less with you Pat I'd play 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 GK: Peretz RB: Bree - that just shows how far backwards we've gone CB: THB CB: Stephens - I think Wood has been awful and one of the main exponents of the sideways/backwards pass LB: Welington RM: Fellows CM: Charles CM: Jander - as long as he gets a break v Blades or possibly Bragg LM: Leo ATT: Arma ATT: Stewart or we could always go 4-3-1 formation with Peretz and McCarthy in goal I'd seriously leave Wood out. I think he's been dreadful for a while now. He is too slow thinking. If on the odd occasion he does pass the ball forward he always passes it behind the player, never a pass to run onto. The recipient then has to check back by which time the oppostion player/s is on them and they end up with no option than passing it straight back to Wood. Then Wood invariably passes sideways or back to the keeper. That's why I'd play Stephens. At least he is capable of passing forwards or bringing the ball into midfield [Post edited 19 Jan 10:47]
