Pen yesterday? 20:13 - Feb 1 with 2429 viewsdavman

I am surprised that more is not being said about that foul on Smyth by Grimes at 0-0. In the Lower School End I was livid; it looked stonewall. Now I have seen it quite a few times on replay, I am even more sure.

Yet, some on here suggested it would have been "soft" and ITV didn't show it in their highlight reel.

So what am I missing?

Smyth did not initiate contact, Grimes certainly moved towards him and took him out; clear cut, surely?

Can we go out yet?

I totally agree. I’ve watched it back a few times too.

It got me that around 15 minutes earlier the ref gave us a free kick for a exactly same foul on Smyth , yet when it's in the penalty box it's not a foul ! I was livid mate! Useless ref.

AND WHEN I DREAM , I DREAM ABOUT YOU AND WHEN I SCREAM I SCREAM ABOUT YOU!!!!!

Agree that it should have been a penalty, by the way.

Stonewall for me. I watched it on CBS Network and it was replayed from different angles. Panel all said pen. Defender sticks his leg and hip out and brings Smyth down.

Smells like a trout farm in here

Does his reputation precede him? Don't get me wrong, I like to see him in the team but he does go down like a house of cards sometimes.

A penalty for anyone who wasn't looking for one.

Whatever happened to indirect free kicks for obstruction? Why have they gone out of the game ?

Sunday League, ref unsure, indirect free kick everytime ....

I can only think he didn't give it because he felt Smyth ran in to Grimes and that Grimes couldn't get out the way.

That said I have seen them given many times.

Never knowingly right.

Sorry, matey, but that is a load of bollox. It is either a pen or it is not. That was stonewall. "Looking for it" implies that he initiated contact. He did not do that.

Even allowing for the 'Smyth factor', I think it would have been a soft pen.

Much more outrageous was when their full back was wrestling him in the corner in the first half for what felt like an eternity, and then Sakamoto getting him in a headlock on the other side. Both of those were thick, thick yellows, but the ref, ridiculously and with embarrassing bias, saw nothing wrong.

Even if he doesn't always help himself, I feel Smyth did well, in the circs, to keep his head and not clock someone. I would have kicked the official in the shins.

It was right in front of me, I thought at the time and still think having seen the replays that Smyth threw himself down (yes there was contact, but the contact did not fell him)

I'm actually implying that the Ref was aware of Smyth's reputation as a 'diver'...which weighed on his decision.

We as fans realise he's ridiclous sometimes and I'm afraid referees will also see that and whether trying or not will factor into their split second decision

He needs to be a bit more clever going forward to get more decisions his way

At the time I thought it was a weird decision by the referee as before that he had given Smyth 4 or 5 free kicks in his favour.
Looking at it again though I think the referee got it right. Maybe.

Overall I thought the ref was good.

Just don't see it that way and really can't see how anyone could.

Not a lot else wrong, but tgat was ridiculous in my eyes.

Very obvious penalty. Not given because he regretted giving him a free kick 2 mins before when he did dive. Smyth does bring it on himself to some extent, but fck me that was blatant.

Too many times his first touch is way heavy and goes too far away from himself, showing the ball, and letting players get challenges in to win the ball or disrupt the play. Then he goes all histrionic hence the fouls etc. Watch him he’s always looking for the foul when he loses the ball. Way too melodramatic at times and playing the victim.

He makes problems with his first touch and hence went into pressure and then initiate, using acceleration, something towards the area the defender is arriving in.
No penalty. INMO😃

Owen used to take heavy touches to goad defenders and keepers into areas and then used his turn of pace. That ain’t happening with Smythe.

Agree.

If you fall over, constantly looking for the foul, there will be just as many occasions when you wont get the decision.

However, this one thought was correct. If it had been against ourselves with a player known for taking a tumble, i doubt we would be saying its a stonewall pen.

Not a pen for me.

This. My initial thought was dive/no penalty because of the way Smyth went down. A more "natural" fall may have yielded a different result.

Totally agree BUT I think Refs are onto Smyth as he sort of resembles Clarke Kent about to take off when he falls over.

I think had he fell normally without his arms up in the air maybe it would've been given.

All day long - à la Shane Long.

Penalty aside, what doesn’t help him is that when he’s fouled he can (and often does) get back up and continue so quickly. It makes it look like a dive because he’s immediately back on his feet and that sometimes mitigates the damage.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Smyth goes down like a 2 bit whore trying to make the rent.

The defender body checked Smyth and it was clear as day he moved into him.

That is clear obstruction, even if it wouldn’t make you fall. It is a foul all day anywhere on the pitch

I’m sure VAR will give it, 10 times out of nine
