Some baffling numbers, looks like the Club was losing £2 million a year through its funding of the ladies’ team.
Absolutely staggering.
Either there has to be a significant hacking of the resource, or we should let the ladies’ team go their own way and play independently from the club.

The vast majority of fans arn't at all interested in the ladies team. It is indeed a complete waste of money and not profitable. It's just an equality thing which doesn't match the reality.

Just had a look back at the attendances for the games played at St Marys
About 7.500 for Portsmouth, just under 4.000 for Newcastle and the rest seemed to be between 2 and 2.500
Not surprised the club are losing money with those attendances
There seems to be a fair amount of games being played at Eastleigh so I would imagine that's more cost effective

It's like having a womens boxing match at St Mary's, just to even things up for equality because we hosted a mens match. But very few would be interested. What is, is. The womens Saints team was never going to be as popular as the mens and womens.boxing won't be either. The equality brigade just need to accept that is the way it is. Personally I reckon £8m on Damien Downs or losing a potential £150m because of Eckerts stupidity are bigger crimes. | |

Those are all good points..nobody wants to lose £2m/year but you can't help feeling that it is an amount that can be reduced by sensible cost cutting alongside a realistic business plan.
Don't play at SMS, slim the coaching staff and don't get carried away with marketing and make use of in-house expertise from the men's side.
My thinking is that football should be on offer for all girls at school level. It's the ultimate team game and should be prioritised...forget rounders and lacrosse ( too elite)
If the grass roots are in place, having a professional team at the top of that pyramid makes sense.
P.S..I lived in the USA for many years and the, soccer is the number one girls sport in school by a long chalk. | | | |

Some fair points, we all know the recruitment for the mens team has been poor in the past and had to change. I agree, that had to be better and had to change too. As for Tonda losing us 150 million, no the EFL did that and had we not had Tonda, we wouldn't have even made the top 6. But we can't pretend that an average attendance of 2500 fans for the women, at much cheaper prices in a huge stadium is sustainable. The mens team have an average of what 30 odd thousand at £35 a ticket? The womens team were moved to St Marys for a vanity project, an equality drive. Why else would you play games that only attract a couple of thousand in a stadium that holds thirty thousand? Yes, let's have a womens team, but don't play at St Marys, pay them according to how many fans watch them etc.
The men are more popular than the women in regards to football and that's just a fact. Nobody ever comes on here and has a melt down because the womens team lost! If the womens team are running at a loss, we shouldn't be covering it from the mens budget. From the attendances at womens games, the vast majority don't care about it and would much rather the money go towards getting the mens team back to the PL. Solak is sorting things out by the looks of it, and stopping all the loss making. [Post edited 4 Jul 11:48]

I guess it boils down to should the woman’s team be self funded or subsidised by money raised through the men’s team?
If the women’s team is self funded then there’s no way they can carry on losing £2 million a year. Cuts would have to be made.
Of course there is a minor issue of how much merchandise sales would go to the women’s team , not sure how they would work that out . | |
