Isn't it more plausible that the significance of an extra 4 billion charge on the public purse actually increases rather than decreases as the total welfare bill gets higher, rather than being lost in a bigger budget? Given that our huge welfare expenditure is translating into a steadily expanding national debt (with interest linked to the bond market's perception of what the magnitude of the debt means), I'd say that a marginal welfare budget increase of say £4bn gets more painful as the debt rises. The other point is that I suspect the real cost of illegal migration is higher than the £4bn official figure. [Post edited 23 Sep 19:40]

I retired 12 months before the new state pension came in so I'm receiving the old rate about 3k less | |

What raises concern with me is the reported 3 trillion debt that the country is now in, 3 trillion is three thousand billion, now that's a lot of debt. And that's a lot of zero's i.e. 3,000,000,000,000.
It's not far fetched to think that "something has got to give" and there is a devastating crisis brewing that'll hit the U.K sometime in the future, because of.
And what makes matters worse is you have got a government in charge that's got sixth form/student campus mentality. The 3K less you're getting may even get lesser if the cupboards are empty, because of the financial insanity of the current lot in charge.
I find it black-comedy stuff when you have got idiots who want Labour to get re-elected, because they think that they are better than a load of imaginary 'fascists' who'll want to balance the books.

Anyone championing the cause gor a worse pension system whether that be scrapping the triple lock or moving to a means tested system should take a long hard look at themselves. When people reach that age having paid into a system then they should be given the best possible deal to see out their lives. Don’t get hung up on national debt and how it reflects on the state of a country’s economy. Debt isn’t a bad thing, it enables us to invest. Also, it depends on who the country is in hock to. If it’s to its people through bonds etc. then that’s not bad but foreign debt not so good. It’s one metric but on its own is pretty meaningless.
Some countries, not many, have zero national debt but you wouldn’t want to live there. Without debt there’s no investment. | |
