Very funny lady, great broadcaster and tireless worker for charity including Childline, support for loneliness among the elderly and of course was prominent, as others have already said, in the assisted dying debate.

Rantzen admitted that rumours about Savile and young girls had reached her long before his crimes became publicly exposed. She said people inside broadcasting had effectively ignored gossip surrounding him, despite Savile enjoying extraordinary access to children, hospitals, charities and powerful institutions. Sadly organisations around protecting children are a magnet to those with the opposite agenda.

The trouble with Dignitas (and I know because I signed up recently) is that you need to be physically well enough to get your arse over to Switzerland. She became too unwell to travel so wasn’t able to put her membership dues to use.
I would be very surprised to find out she was a paedo but everyone already knew Savile was a wrongun long before he died. |  |

Her good friend Derek Sears turned out to orchestrate a paedo gang of hangliders that abused kids at Sir David Jason's house.
And her husband, Desmond Wilcox was caught up in an MP child abuse ring.
And her good friend Sir Cliff was a target of Operation Yew Tree, however the BBC got him off by filming the raid live from a helicopter, effectively destroying any chance of a trial and meaning all evidence would have been inadmissable in court.
Oh, and she was good friends with Sir Jimmy. Who she admitted retrospectively that she had suspicions about, but certainly never went public with that until he was dead.
Must have just been incredibly unfortunate for Dame Esther to be linked to all those characters and know nothing about it. Especially having been a victim of abuse herself by a family member
I think most of us would be shocked if anyone we knew turned out to be a child abuser. Let alone a whole network of her chums.
With that track record, you have to wonder what the Childline set up was really all about. Because they don't seem to have had any significant impact in exposing and protecting children over all these years.
And I certainly don't think the "Right to Choose" was really the likely aim of the Assisted Dying Bill, championed by Dame Esther. It was to give the state the authority to euthanise people, As is being seen in Canada where they have introduced such a bill. And lo and behold, euthansia is now the highest cause of death in that country. Do you really want the Government to be able to decide whether your life is worthwhile? [Post edited 2 Oct 12:56]

Strangely, she registered with Dignitas back in 2024 when she was well enough to travel. She has certainly done plenty of travelling around for campaigning over the last 2 years, so its hypocritical that she didn't take the chance to choose when she could, and was too unwell to take up the option. Maybe she really just wanted the Government to have that power to apply it to us? | | | |
