| Alfie Lloyd - Well Done 10:13 - Oct 15 with 1990 views | NorthantsHoop | So good to see Alfie get his 1st goal at LR. He is developing nicely and hopefully that goal will push him on. Always liked him since 1st seeing him against Spurs in a friendly a couple of years back. Like the way that Julien has been patient with him and loaning out last season has helped. Strong and with pace just what we need and a trier as well. [Post edited 15 Oct 10:13]

| Alfie Lloyd - Well Done on 10:45 - Oct 15 with 1865 views | nix | Yes he’s been managed really well by the club. I think the loan did him good even though he didn’t play a huge number of minutes. It must have been good to experience being promoted and playing with a load of determined players and he scored a couple of goals. You can really see the progress since he was here last. He controls the ball much better in tight areas and he’s more aware of where he is on the pitch related to everyone else so he’s able to get the ball to them. His pressing seems more effective and I thought he took the goal well as well. | | | |
| Alfie Lloyd - Well Done on 12:15 - Oct 15 with 1707 views | ArvoSturm | His touch to set-up Kolli's long-range effort was class. I think he's had a rough time on here, particularly in some of the match reports. Like the playground, choose someone on the fringes for the cruellest gags. Still lots to do. But good to see him taking steps to prove folks wrong. | | | |
| Alfie Lloyd - Well Done on 14:22 - Oct 15 with 1431 views | robith | He still has the first touch of a bread knife, but it's really lovely to see him and Adamson flourishing. They both rarely make the same mistake twice | | | |
| Alfie Lloyd - Well Done on 14:42 - Oct 15 with 1356 views | Myke | I really loved his goal (even though Derby’s defence was glacial in their attempts to close him down). We have seen him lack composure in front of goal on many occasions, this time he absolutely took his time and got his just rewards And I know Kemper has his own thread and deservedly so, but that flick to set up Alfie shows there is a lot more going on than just ‘wingers hate playing against me’ - super signing | | | |
| Alfie Lloyd - Well Done on 17:39 - Oct 15 with 1184 views | stevec | I’ve adapted the Harold Lloyd signature tune for Alfie and been singing it along to myself watching replays of last nights highlights. It really works for his ‘assist’ to Harvey Vales goal, especially the close up of his control, loss of control, and subsequent unintended tripping up of his opponent. He is a joy to watch. Lovely clinical finish for his goal too. Alf-fie Lloyyd, da da da da, dada da dah. | | | |
| Alfie Lloyd - Well Done on 18:31 - Oct 15 with 1062 views | Northernr | I think it's a great sign of a positive squad culture that we've got two players in Lloyd and Adamson who none of us would have had anywhere near our preferred teams in August and they've played their way in through commitment, dedication and form. QPR have fawned over 'names' too often since the money arrived, I absolutely love Stephan's approach that he doesn't care who you are or how old you are if you deserve a shirt you'll be getting one, even if that means leaving a more prominent squad member out. | | | |

Yes adamson is great and showing up consistently and doing really well. Lloyd is good and has raw potential but jury perhaps sril out until he can show what he can do more often

I had a really good look at Adamson playing underneath me last night. He barely put a foot wrong, nobody really went round him, he kept it very simple and looked assured. The thing I'm interested in as we move forwards and he gets more games... Is he (quite reasonably) being instructed to play like that? You're new to the league, you're young(ish), it's a big step up, for the first 20-25 games just keep it nice and tight and steady. Don't let your winger come inside, don't get caught up field, just tuck in nice and narrow next to Jimmy, do the basics, defend your box. ATM we do lose a little bit going forwards with him on that side because, well, at the moment he doesn't. Not in the same way Kemper, Cirkin, Lamptey and Mbengue have licence to. I wonder if he's been told to just hang back on that for now and as he becomes more settled he'll be permitted to be a bit more ambitious going forwards. Not a criticism by any means, just a little nugget about Stephan's coaching/man management perhaps. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| Alfie Lloyd - Well Done on 18:47 - Oct 15 with 1013 views | bosh67 | Lloyd is an absolute bloody nightmare to play against because he's very quick and physical and just swarms defenders trying to get out as well. He also seems to have boundless energy which must be absolutely wearing to defend against. I thought he linked up really well with Kolli. They caused lots of problems. | |

Think perhaps that playing three across the middle means your defenders can spend more time defending and your attackers attacking. That big hole between full back and winger doesn’t seem such a big hole anymore. Noticed midfielders are now doubling up with the full back too. It just makes us look more compact.

"I wonder if he's been told to just hang back on that for now and as he becomes more settled he'll be permitted to be a bit more ambitious going forwards." I was wondering the same. It would make sense. I also wonder if Bould is now more involved in the first team defensive coaching. I have no idea, but...and admitting that there's no new ideas in football... We're showing real signs of Venables defensive tactics at the moment: 1) Wingers show the men inside to the war zone/the egg, then we rob them. 2) If that doesn't work, then full-backs have to keep their men outside for as long as possible to allow us to swamp the middle. I wonder this because Bould is of the QPR/Venables mould: Bould learned from George Graham. Graham learned from Venables when he was his reserve coach at Rangers. Venables of course, learned from Sexton at Rangers.

Much like Kemper on the left, he's making it difficult for the others to take his starting spot back. He has gone from basically 'last resort' to 'genuine First Team option' in the space of a summer. Great attitude and seems like everyone genuinely rates him. As for Lloyd, he has impressed me. He might still be undercooked in some aspects of his game but, wow, he is a real handful for any CB this season. He's quick, looks to have bulked up and his positional awareness has come on leaps and bounds. I liked the way we set up with 2 x Dev Squad products up front, with 2 more on the bench and none of them looked like they were off the pace. It's a good look for us.

Apart from me I will add. On record on here with both, well not first XI, but worth persevering with and giving game time. I’m not saying I’m an expert by any means, but fans are far quick to judge. Even if a player plays badly, or doesn’t hit top form, there are usually underlying signs worth spotting. Delighted for both Lloyd and Adamson. Perhaps only cost-effective squad players, but I’m sure they’ll both have something to say about that going forwards. [Post edited 15 Oct 21:15]

A good young pro who has done everything this club has asked of him. Listen to what Dunne says about him, if in any doubt.

Some new phrases for me there. Considering that the War Zone our central defence resembled most closely in recent seasons has been 1940 France, I wouldn’t have felt confident inviting any opponent in there, but that’s the sign of our improvement, I suppose. No idea what the Egg is supposed to be. Which egg? Not chocolate any more, presumably. I’ve got a soft spot for Alfie, there was a lovely video of him signing a few years ago and the pride on his Mum’s face is something I’ve never forgotten. [Post edited 15 Oct 22:45]

'The egg' is a Venables term, Sheener. I think Francis Peacock's excellent book goes through it. 'The war zone' is probably a GAA term, now that you mention it, but it's a simple term to focus the team on where and when we defend so that we don't get dragged all over the pitch without the ball.- I suppose in modern footy terms it's high press/low press/etc.

Both, I agree, Myke. But I'm talking about the introduction of three particular things here - the high line, wingers showing in, full backs showing out, all absolute staples of Rinus Michels' football that Sexton used to hop on the ferry to watch while our manager. Francis's book that I mentioned above does draw a timeline through Sexton watching European games, Ajax in particular, and then the evolution from Jago's tactics to Sexton's tactics, at least in these regards.

But did Venables even play under Sexton at QPR? I thought he and Jago left around the same time in ‘74?
