Our best game against Bolton 07:35 - Oct 16 with 708 viewsPatfromPoole

Well, if it wasn’t, I want to know what beats it…..

What a night this was.

My fondest memory of being in the Milton Stand, which emptied a bit at one point, and then quickly re-filled…..

This was in the halcyon days when you could pay at the gate on the night.

Tried to get in the East Terrace, which was full, hence having to hop it over to the Milton.

And a slightly mental pitch invasion from the West Stand, of all places……

Brought back some marvellous memories, thanks Pat.

This game was the replay following a 2-2 draw at Bolton’s old ground ( Deepdale ? ) if memory serves. I was there, I recall on the previous Sunday, when Richard Hall playing at centre half scored two headers to put us 2-0 up at half time. In the end we were lucky to come away with a draw.

At the time Richard Hall was a very fine young prospect.

Yep, we were there, it was a Burnden Park
Hall scored two quick goals, pretty much identical headers from corners in the first half and we were cruising. Second half was totally different and we were hanging on at the end
Memories fade but from recollection it was freezing cold and half of the away end was a super market
Didn’t go to the replay so listened to it on the wireless and watched the highlights, brilliant equaliser by Barry Horne and impromptu pitch invasion.

Fail we may, sail we must

Silly boy, brain fade again as age takes its toll, of course it was Burnden Park.

What I do remember now you mention it, was how damn cold it was. Definitely a case of “ it’s tough up North “ in regard to the weather.

Yes, I was at Burnden Park and also remember how cold it was. I was with a girlfriend I'd met on the Trans-Siberian Express, and even she was shivering. It was never one of my favourite away grounds. In the 70s, there used to be a little group of us on that massive open terrace behind the goal, who'd then have a running battle with the Bolton mob who'd follow us back to the station. Saints' fans got some revenge when Bolton came down here, breaking into the away fans' cage on the Archer's Road end. Remember that cage with a gate?

My first Saints v Bolton game wasn't bad though. It was on New Year's Day, 1966 and we won 5-1, with 2 goals from Chivers and 2 more from Norman Dean. A month later I saw Dean score a hat-trick at Fratton Park, when we beat Pompey 5-2. He had a real purple patch in that promotion season, much like Tony Funnell did in 1978, but he was replaced by the great Ron Davies and never really heard from again.

I would say one game that could be put forward as a contender for best game against Bolton could be the clash against them on 22nd October 1978 at the Dell although not the best result.

Both teams were in the promotion frame, I think we started the day in 4th, just outside the automatic top 3.

27,296 was the official attendance that day and not that many were Bolton fans maybe 750-900 tops and in a pre segregation fences Archers Road terrace they enjoyed a torrid time.

We took the lead on 18 mins through Nick Holmes and doubled it on the hour mark through Phil Boyer and looked home and dry.

Frank Worthington(who would play a season for Saints in 1983/84) pulled one back within 2 mins and then they equalised on 76 minutes through ex Man Utd winger Willie Morgan.

A pulsating game and one that was costly, Bolton would go up as Champions and we would finish second a point behind, if we had held on then we would have finished top

That time in 96 when we win 1-0 at Burnden Park with MLT scoring. Pretty awful, tense game but it left it in our own hands to stay up.

We did a minibus uo there and were parked in a huge car park behind our end (probably for the supermarket). A Bolton fan wasnt happy with all the Saints fans celebrating and went over to a Saints bloke and said "Come on, me and you" and was doing the bouncing up and down goading him. The Saints fan wasn't interested but it went on. The Bolton bloke said "Come on, you have the first punch". So the Saints matey hit him and knocked him spark out. It was like that scene in Snatch with the Bolton fan flying up in the air and then crashing down on his back. There was silence as everyone expected a riot, and then laughter

Another trip down memory lane, thanks Nick.

As for Frank Worthington :-

What a showman he was and no mean player either.

It still rankles with me that Adrian Heath scored a header against us in the dying minutes of the F A cup Semi Final at Highbury all those years ago. I’m confident we would have beaten Everton in a replay and Frank would then have been able to show his skills at Wembley in the Final.

I drove to that 1-0 game at Burnden Park when we relegated them.

I recall a number of their fans in the side stand not taking this well and trying to climb into our packed end behind the goal.

Bolton battered us that day, but we somehow held on for a massive win.
