I’m sure we’ve all done a few. This morning I’m walking around Brookside, Liverpool, site of the Scouser series. The pics I take will have Mrs Boston thinking I’m a nice bloke, myself, the words ‘video nasty’ comes to mind.
I went to Paris in 1998 for a World Cup game and made a special detour to take a picture of the Di & Dodi tunnel. No idea why, our generation’s Deely Plaza perhaps.

The Mizell Brothers, Larry and Alphonso (‘Fonce’), were a 70s music production team known for bringing their lush, celestial jazz-funk sound to the likes of Donald Byrd, the Blackbyrds, Johnny Hammond etc (IYKYK), beloved by the Gilles Peterson generation. In other words, so hip it hurts.
Had them in the back of the cab when they were visiting London sometime in the 90s and they were keen to do a sightseeing tour.
Digging deep, I dredged up all the ‘cutting edge’ locations I could think of (you know, Loftus Road etc) only to be blindsided by Fonce’s insistence that there was really only one thing they wanted to see … Buckingham Palace.
Can’t say I felt it was ‘embarrassing’ (the whole point of the OP, I know) and I was happy to oblige. It was just a massive (and, for me, rather amusing) surprise more than anything else, confounding all my expectations.

Bringing home a piece of tourist tat and thinking why did I do that?
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one's lifetime." (Mark Twain)

I used to visit Southwold about 4 times a year and buy brown shrimps from a bloke along the quay. One time I went and he was nowhere to be found. Another bloke shook his head sadly and said “ Ah, he fell overboard and the propellor cut his leg off” I told this story in the pub and they started to laugh. Can't believe I fell for it.

Years ago my family and I were walking along the side of Central Park. I was wearing a QPR shirt and had told them I'd definitely get a few URRRRS. As I hadn't I rushed on ahead and without the family seeing, I asked a stall holder if he'd give me a URRRRS when we all walked past. However, when we walked past him his URRRRS came out sounding like a panto pirate shouting OOO ARRGH and everyone fell about laughing.

Not something I've done but the number of tourists queuing at a wall with a cut up shopping trolly and a sign saying Platform 9 3/4 at Kings Cross to have a picture taken is truly mind boggling!

The sheer number of photos she had me take of her and the tower was unreal.
Admittedly I am a pretty shabby photographer but jeez we all know the thing leans.
There's some lovely and well-photographed diving rocks at Hampi in India. Loads of people get great pics of themselves running, jumping and turning middair and giving a cool thumbs up in their photos. I ran up, slipped and the photo of me falling backwards with a look of terror on my face could probably pass as one of those "photos taken just before someone died" macabre things you see online.

Were you standing on the ‘butte herbeuse’?

Sounds like the so-called ‘famous blue door’ on Westbourne Park Road. It’s not even the original one, as I understand it.

Went on a horse drawn carriage with the mrs in Central Park a couple of years ago (embarrassing enough I hear you say).
The fella in charge of the horse didn't speak a great deal of English, but he seemed to get very excited about the fountain that appears in the start of friends.
Now neither myself or the wife are fans of friends, but we felt obliged to get out and take photos of ourselves pissing about next to said fountain
My brother-in-law lives in West Byfleet and when we go visit I take the kids on a little side mission to Horsell Common and visit the Sand Pit when HG Wells envisiaged the Martians landing. Was there on Sunday as it happens. Bloody dog walkers at every turn. The kids are yet to find any remnants of machines just yet.
