I would query a few in here, Ted Bates as a manager yes, but probably not as a player , if you are having someone of his era then you would have Charlie Wayman, also missing over the years are the likes of Derek Reeves, George O'Brien, Martin Chivers, Steve Moran, Mark Dennis, Phil Boyer, James Beattie, Jose Fonte.

I would question the inclusion of Tommy Forey who I have never heard of and isn't in the record books & Peter Sillett who played 65 games not 445 for the club.

Also i wouldn't class Wayne Bridge in the list or Sadie Mane, Virgil Van Dijk or Gareth Bale

25 is too many “legends” imo
Should be 10 maximum and players who contributed as record goal scorers, appearances and things of significant note to the history of the club
Anyone with less than 100 appearances can’t be classed as a legend, great players who’ve had great careers but not a Saints legend
If you’re including Gareth Bale then you’d have to include Jason Dodd, neither would be a legend in my eyes, Doddy was a a great servant to the club but that’s it for me

Also why does everyone or everything have to be a legend, epic or amazing nowadays
Went out for dinner last Sunday and ordered fish and chips, “amazing” was the response to my choice from the waitress. Old man Shotters rolled his eyes a grumpily grumbled about “the youth of today” under his breath

I expect Jimmy Case will be surprised to find out he’s Scottish.

Pahars and Bale are English too. Huge if true!

Been mulling it over whilst repairing a lathe and plaster ceiling this morning
1 Channon
2 Paine
3 Le Tissier
4 Stokes
5 Lambert
6 Davies
7 Holmes
8 Peach
9 Moran
10 Ball

Channon top because he’s our top goal scorer, won the FA Cup and captained England whilst at Saints

I’ve included David Peach as he played in two major finals for us and scored in one along with Nick Holmes

Ron Davies below Lambert and Stokes. That's a bit hard to swallow...as the actress said to the Bishop....also I note the shock omission of midfield supremo Jimmy Melia from the list.

Tommy Forey now approaching mythical status.
The bloke of that name on the original list made 422 appearances and scored 47 goals...not Tommy Forecast I would say

The only guy called Tommy who made that many appearances was Tommy Traynor but he was a LB so doubt he scored 47 goals.

We need Interpol on the case to find this Forey fellow.

The vast majority of those aren’t legends in the slightest. Benali is a lovely bloke, a true mush and done some incredible things since he stopped playing but he was a liability when he played and most fans were on his back.

Ward prowse is a skate who’s won an attendance award, and achieved nothing with the club in real terms.

Lallana was at least part of getting us promoted but he was a rat faced c*nt who spoke ill of the chic on many occasions and forced a move so no he’s out.

Bobby stokes god rest his soul had one of the most important goals in the clubs history but that doesn’t make him a legend.

Mane, VVD and bale you’re basing it on what they did after not what they did for saints.

Of that list I’d say the only real legends are le tiss, bates, channon, Holmes, Daveis, Paine and lambert.

The rest are at best cult figures

Steve Moran is a Saints legend imo
Scored 90 odd goals including the winner at Fratton which even if he’d done nothing else makes him a legend in my eyes
Also Danny Ings, just for the knee slide in front of the Fratton end

Yeah Moran for Fratton I’d agree with, Ings less so, good player but didn’t really want to be here.

Also on that list some of those are frankly bizarre, including Claus means surely you have to include monkou, and non of the center backs were even close to the quality of mark wright who’s comfortably the best I’ve ever seen in a Saints shirt.

Also they’ve completely left out Sydenham from it too, and if you’re including some of those players then where’s David Armstrong (my second favourite player ever behind le tiss).

I’m not arguing for any of those players inclusion btw, more to show ridiculous the list is.

I don't think Tommy Forecast made a senior appearance for anyone

It's basically a really badly researched list, Peter Sillett, 2 t's, wasn't a goal keeper as is listed there and didn't make over 400 appearances for anyone, less than 350 in a career at Saints and Chelsea. Really bizarre choice if your looking for players from that era then Cliff Huxford or the previously mentioned Tommy Traynor would be better shouts

As time goes on these lists change, supporters of my dads generation or older would say Eric Day-158 goals, Tommy Mulgrew-100 goals, Derek Reeves- 173 goals and George O'Brien-180 goals are far more deserving than some who have made less than 100 appearances. Also surely CB Fry should be in with a shout, perhaps one of the older contributors here could let us know how good he was?

I am extremely old but I would need to be to have seen CB Fry.He was 13 when we were formed and died in 1956 at the age of 80 something..

He was really a cricketer and a brilliant one by all accounts. He played a handful of games for us and alarmingly played twice for the Skates.

My top two legends remain Davies and Channon. The latter dated a girl in my class who's old man owned the local riding stables..phuq me, it would need a drive by shooting to liven up that anecdote.

Tongue was firmly in my cheek with regards to CB Fry!

It's quite telling as to how football has changed, since Mick Channon I think there's only been 2 players who've scored more than 100 goals for Saints, Steve Moran scored 99. Anyone capable of that many goals is lured away by the bigger clubs nowadays

Sadly never saw Mick Channon play for Saints, he left in the summer when I started going to matches. I love hearing my dads memories of seeing a lot of these players from the late 50's and I remember fondly my grandads recollections of Charlie Wayman, he always felt that the Saints board didn't really want to get promoted in the late 40's? when we should have and fell away after Charlie got injured

Yes, I guessed you were fishing for me with the CBF line

Fun trivia fact...he played for us in the 1902 Cup Final

The difference between Keegan & VVD, was that Keegan left on a point of principle, he felt that Lawrie had called him a cheat, it wasn't about money or a bigger club, it was about principles and he dropped into the Second Division and retired from England.

Saints could have kept him there was no freedom of contract but back then the board were men of honour and understood the situation

VVD was purely about money and paying for a big club and forcing a move.

The whole thing is generated by AI, hence why there’s so many mistakes. I’d guess some of it comes from forums like this that have threads on this topic and people have put forecast as a joke, but the wrong machine doesn’t understand humour

Why is it utter trash ?

Fact of the situation was that VVD was tapped up by Liverpool in the summer of 2016, he was pictured on a private jet that Liverpool flew him up to Merseyside on to illegally show him around their facilities.

We dug our heels in after both the player and Liverpool FC plotted being our backs and tried to force a cut price move.

Hence we refused to let him move in the Summer of 2017 for under our valuation and made him stay until January

So tell me what your take on it was

However the club got a great fee for him and he was an exceptional player. Sadly that was squandered. Keegan leaving messed up the following season.

I think we lost at home to Villa and Lawrie told the players they hadn’t given their all and had cheated him and the supporters
According to Lawrie’s biography that was it for KK

Shame as he’s another player I just missed seeing play for Saints, I did see him play in a charity 5 aside but that doesn’t count
