What other caretaker manager do you remember who has been allowed to sign one player on a 2 year deal, negotiate to bring in another player on a permanent deal and bring in 3 players on loan and terminate several loan deals?
To me that doesn't sound like a manager you only intend to keep in the position for a few games. Giving him the chance to make such transfer dealings suggests Dunphy initially intended to Beech until the end of the season. His actions imply that he was going to do, even if there is no direct quote of him saying so.
The Jordan and Holden deals were virtually completed when Eyre was manager, while I imagine the Chairman will have had a big say in the departure of all the loan players.
And while Beech is in charge of the team, surely he has a right to strengthen his squad, hence the recruitment of Kurucz, Bogdanovic and Ormerod, especially when the players he was left with haven't performed.
When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Yes, I agree. He signed Byrne from Forest as well.
The point I'm making is that Dunphy shouldn't have let Beech make these signings if after 3 games he is going to undermine him by (allegedly) looking for another manager. By allowing him to make signings it suggests he his more than a caretaker manager. I'm not making a comment on whether Beech is the right man or not, just how Dunphy has handled the appointment of a new manager.

I think Dunphy knows that we were in a proper mess when he sacked Eyre. At that stage, he either gives Beech total backing (and lets not forget that for his own reasons, Dunphy chose not to appoint Beech in the Summer) letting make signings left, right and centre, or he sits tight and lets Beech make the most of what Eyre left behind.
Unfortunately, with the January transfer window and games coming thick and fast, Dunphy may well see Flicker as being first choice (which is no guarantee of getting him), but he has to give backing to Beech to make changes. Wages on Byrne aren't gonna break the bank (lets face it he's added to the youth ranks rather than the first team), and the others have been loan signings, Jordan side.
I think Dunphy has found the right balance, allowing Beech to make changes, and giving him a genuine opportunity to stake a claim for the job.
Whatever happens, survival in League One will justify whatever decisions that have been taken irrespective of whether they seemed the right ones at the time.

You're basing your views on 'Sky Sports Understands', which is as reliable as electrical coffee.
Re. Byrne, he's been with us for a while, so it could also be a deal that was virtually set up under Eyre, although I'm just guessing.

Ok, even if an approach of some kind has not been made for Flitcroft. I think the indecision and uncertainty which surrounds Beech's appointment is unhelpful. Clarity would help everyone involved; manager, fans and board.
The way the appointment has been handled up to this point means I wouldn't be surprised if there is an inkling of truth in Sky Sports' report.

What clarification is required? Chris Beech is the caretaker manager.
Until an announcement is made regarding a permanent manager, Chris Beech will remain as caretaker manager. The club don't need to comment every time a 'Sky Sports understands...' story appears.

I really cant see our manager, sorry, 'assistant' manager, walking away from a mid-table Championship job where he is hugely admired and respected by the club and its fanbase. Opinions on Keith are somewhat varied. But Flickers is universally popular at Oakwell. And anybody who watches the Reds week in week out knows the value of the man. He isnt a number two. He is key to our club and its 5 year strategy. I am not saying it wont happen, or that it would be a shock - its football. Anything can and often does happen. But as I say, watching the guy during games, taking training, taking part IN training, I get the impression he loves it here. And why wouldnt he? The numpty element of our support showed themselves up in August, and still do from time to time. But believe me, if you asked the 10,000 regulars, what is the best thing about BFC, the answer would be Hillcroft, their strategies, the football, and the pride they have restored in our proud little club. So it would take a bizarre set of circumstances for either of them to walk away from that, and each other. Now, were we 9 points away from safety, and not 9 above the drop-zone, then maybe it would be different. I say maybe though, because even if we do drop this year, I wouldnt want any other management. I repeat though, you never know. But I wouldnt believe SkySports. They 'understood' that Vaz Te had rejected a new deal last sunday. A deal he has not yet been offered... It was only last friday that Keith spoke of their first 6 months in situ. Where he admitted it had been the hardest time of his life. He had a daughter, moved ere, got early grief, and recently has had family illnesses (daughter and grandmother). But he also said it was the best decision they had made, to come here. And that he loves being manager of BFC. But SkySports 'understands' that Flicker hates it.. :) And we are signing Sergio Busquets for ten bob and a melted mars bar. You'll be fine Daleys... go get Mark Robins

With all due respect, that post was unbelievably condescending. You've not told us anything we don't already know, Hillcroft were at Dale for the best part of 4.5 years, we know how they work and we're fully aware of how important Flicker is to their success.
I'd also be very very surprised if we managed to entice Flicker back to Dale, but there are recurring rumours about Flicker not being particularly happy with his current situation. I'd expect him to be as happy as a pig in shit on a professional level, but the additional time away from his (young) family is an issue if(!) the rumours are to be believed.
This 'story' has been rumbling on for a few weeks now, since Hilly mentioned Dale's interest in Flicker in an interview, and I thought it had been put to bed. Now that Barnsley have issued an offical statement on the matter (albeit denying any approach), I'm starting to think there could be something in it.

Hillcroft were part way through a much publicised '7-year plan' at Spotland, when they buggered off to Oakwell.
Plans, strategies, projections. Don't believe 'em. Owt can happen.
Mark Robins....? I'd rather have Ted Robbins !

the headline says it all, "flitcroft wanted back at deepdale". If this level of incompitancy was shown in any other trade they would be shown the door.
On a brighter note, i'd love nothing more than to see flicker back, with beechy as his assistant! He's the only manager i'd accept as the permanent manager without experience, simply because of what hes done at this club!

Why all the fuss it's just paper talk! This is someone's agent flying a kite, probably Flickers Dunphy has given the job to Beechy and he is making big changes in the personnel at the club and I don't believe that will change in the transfer window, I think he will have the job to the end of the season whatever happens

The story is still on SSN on the news ticker at the bottom, strange they haven't updated with Barnsley's denial. When Hill was linked with Walsall in a similar way (that was on a Sunday too), they updated it as soon as Dale said there was nothing in it.

You may be very disappointed mr Barnsley as there is a very big pull towards our little club for Flickers. BTW you say you have watched him in games, take training and take part in training, you some kind of stalker? has flickers had to get a restraining order against you and simply decided he would be better off 70 miles away from you?

This is a fair point as do I not recall 2 weeks ago 'Sky Sports understands Chris Beech has been given the first team managers position until the end of the season'?
All this specultaion could be ended with a simple statement from the club clarifying the position.

Don't Preston have a caretaker manager too!
Is it possible this SSN are confusing candidates for the position at Deepdale rather than Rochdale?

Under normal circumstances, an Assistant Manager at a mid-table (at best!) Championship club would surely jump at the chance to become Manager of a L1 club, even a relegation threatened side. Especially if there was a bit of history between them (ex-player for example).
I'm not sure whether this is true of Flitcroft because of the close relationship he has with Hill. Having said that, I imagine a lot depends on whether Flitcroft is happy to be in Keith Hill's shadow (as much as the fans refer to them as Hillcroft, the media still only want to talk to Hill and it's Hill who takes 99% of the credit).
The shambles on Saturday was very disappointing after a couple of very encouraging performances. I'd be happy if Flitcroft were appointed manager, but I think Beech deserves a chance of a couple more games at least.

I'd argue that Flitcroft could be a potential disaster, for the very reason you've quoted - he's happy to work in the shadow of someone else. That's no reflection on Flickers as an assistant, but we all know people who could never make that step up
I suspect Flickers knows this, and so I'd say leave well alone
Didnt CD mention in an interview published either the MEN or the OB or on the BBC web site that the Job was Beechs to lose and that he was in the hot seat until the seasons end..

Mr Dunphy has said its Beech's job to lose. The bit about Beech being appointed until the end of the season seems to have stemmed from a 'Sky Sports understands..' story, there has been nothing official as far as I'm aware.
