Trafalgar Day 16:55 - Oct 21 with 1248 viewsSaintNick

On Trafalgar Day it's worth remembering that Nelson was 5ft 6in and his statue is 17ft 4.
That's Horatio of 1:3.

It's nice that you appreciate one of our historic days. Serious question, are there any historic days associated with your town, apart from the Soton Boat show?

Did not realise Trafalgar is a Pompey thing?

Well, the fleet was based in Pompey, many of the men lived and were trained in Pompey including Nelson. Many of the ships were built, and refurbished in Pompey, The fleet sailed from Pompey, and returned to Pompey. So Portsmouth was mainly responsible for one of the most historical days in this countries history. Trafalgar day is still celebrated every year in Pompey, and his flagship still sits in the Dockyard with hundreds of thousands of people visiting it each month.

But, apart from that, not much.

Let’s move Trafalgar Square to portsMouth then shall we? What a bunch of desperate saddos.

Unfortunate fact that Nelson, our no 1 Naval hero was from Norfolk and his crew were from all parts of the country and many nations. Oh, and as a hard-on for any BLM pilgrims reading this, if you look closely at the friezes at the base of Nelson’s column, one of the crew depicted there is clearly a black man.

Nelson actually lived in London, you are right though many of the men lived in Portsmouth shortly before the press gang knocked them on the head and forced them to go to sea against their will.

They were just the ones who were too fat and unfit to run away like they did in the English Civil War.

I am starting a new competition, the winner will be the person who posts up a thread about an event in history where 130 doesn't use it to claim that Portsmouth were a significant part of this happening and that Southampton have never been significant in history ever and are in Pompey's shadow.

The chances of press ganging in skatesville must have been quite small after a while, as men would have legged it to safety pretty quick which is why the press roamed inland and to other ports (Southampton for example) to find them.

Portsea was more likely populated with broken men, incapable old people and pox-ridden whores (some things never change....) making them unsuitable for service.

We had nothing to do with your cup win in 76, well except for providing the goal scorer.

There were many reasons for Victory being built in Chatham.
One of many being the skills were there, along with a positive attitude to hard work.
And they knew how to treat horses with kindness.

Interestingly (to me anyway) the remains of at least one of the hulls of that fleet can still be seen on the mud of the Hamble at low tide.

The sort of mud which the ‘skylarks’ in portsMyth harbour used to grovel around in looking for pennies tossed in from passengers on the Gosport ferry. I guess that’s what kids had to do in Portsea with no known parentage to look after them. Rashford would have been appalled.
