Totally agree that you would expect Danny Ings to do the best for himself whilst the club need to look after their own interests. However, the most important thing to do right now is to get him back to full fitness as soon as possible and to get more points on the board. Nothing can happen with him until summer at the earliest if he wants to leave so let’s just concentrate on winning some more football matches.

I just can’t see which one of the big clubs he could go to and get a regular start, and not sure anyone would want to pay him a fortune with his injury record.

I can see someone in the next tier down like West Ham or even Leicester more likely to come in for him

And it would say it all if we sold him to clubs in that tier, when we should be aiming there ourselves.

100% agree
.
We used to sell to the traditional top 4 clubs or so.

Now the likes of leicester can poach our players.

The sad thing is how many of our supporters think thats ok.

Shows how far we have fallen.

The likes of Leicester who won the Premier League not so long ago and who could well be playing Champions League football next season?

The likes of Leicester who were playing league one football 10 or so seasons ago.

The likes of leicester who play in a similair size stadium.

The likes of Leicester who have also sold their best players.

Remind you of another cliub?

Leicester are what Saints wanted to be.

It’s just because those clubs can now pay players well north of 100 grand a week, and we don’t want to or can’t, simple as that

Which now puts Leicester in that bracket above us

Leicester are showing the ambition (financial clout) that Man City did when the money came in, athough to counter that, Man City do have top club history from the late 60's/70's

If Danny Ings had not not been so injury prone at Liverpool, he would have been scoring for fun up there and as a consequence of that, would never even have gone out on loan to us, never mind actually leave them.
Saints did all the hard work on getting him back playing, scoring goals and resurrecting his career, and now he won't sign a new contract.

So how far have we fallen, ten years ago we were in League One and had been out of the top flight for 6 years, truth is aside from the big 6 few clubs can get or sustain higher than top 6.

Since they won the Premier League Leicester have finished 12th, 9th, 9th and last season 5th, they may get Champions League this season, but they have established themselves as a top 10 club nothing else at present.

This thread is ironic seeing on another thread we are sneering at Pompey fans for demanding that Kenny Jackett is sacked as he isn't winning gaes for Pompey a club their fans see as being better than 6th in League 1.

Yet here we are saying look how we have fallen, we haven't fallen at all, we have established our selves as a solid mid table club who could challenge for the top 10 and that is where we sit.

Of course for some people Gao is strangling the club when he should be putting in £100 million per year as the fella at Everton is doing

We have fallen in the fact that now a club who have established themselves as a top 10 club can now be linked to our best players.

As you state that's where we would want to be. When we were finishing 8th,7th,6th and 8th 4 seasons running our players were linked and sold to the traditional top clubs.

We have gone from a top 10 club to a club the last 3 seasons has finished 17th ,16th and 11th.

We should have finished this Season in the top 10 but that is looking unlikely now.

Personally I see Saints as a club that should be top 10 and its sad that some fans now think we are over achieving.

It could be argued they are correct and we have not got the finances now to be a top 10 club.

Why do you think we should be top 10 all the time?

We spent a big part of our history in the lower leagues, had some golden years in the first division when it was much more open and less about who could pay the big money.

Then the premier league came and we spent most of the 90s avoiding relegation with maybe one top 10 finish, then aside from a good couple of seasons under Strachan we struggled again until 2014 when we had the best 4 years ever.

More realistic to see Saints as a lower/ mid table premier league club who are capable of having great seasons now and again, unless we get a mega rich owner willing to splash out hundreds of millions

You use the word “should” but there are no shoulds in football. Liverpool should be doing better. Man Utd should be closer to City. Sheffield United should be down by now. What happens happens. We are an average Premier league team who had a good run followed by some bad injuries and a bad run. We are in mid table which is where you would normally expect to find us in a reasonable year. There is no point in worrying about what might or might not have been. We are where we are and just need to play the hand we have, not the one we wished we had.

So tell me why you think we should be a club in the top 10 ? why do you think we have a right to be there ?

Five years ago people were complaining that we had no ambition because we sold all our players to top 5 clubs, I said back then the problem would be when we couldn't sell any players and now it seems people have woken up to that fact.

We aren't in it for quick fixes, we lumbered ourselves with several underperforming players who we have been sending out on loan but still having to pay big money in wages for, we could not buy our way out of trouble.

We have had two bad seasons when as you say we finished 17th & 16th, but last season saw us in 11th and you look at where we are as a football club that is just about where we should be, there are 10 clubs out there with bigger grounds and they are filling them, whilst we all take pride in telling the world that we wont be renewing season tickets because the club has no ambition.

As a club there are 10 clubs who should do better than us purely because of size of club, ground and support, some of them have more money, we have to do what Southampton FC has always done and that is do things our way and then we prosper.

11th place last season you see as under achieving, but we have only finished above that in the top flight on 15 occasions in 136 years

So I would say our par finish should be 11th, if we get above that then we are overachieving and below that underachieving

Than is not being negative it is about being realistic and setting targets that can be achieved instead of complaining every season that we would have finished 6th if Gao had spent £100 million, that strategy hasn't done Everton or Spurs much good

That will be Spurs who have a net spend of 19million more than us over the last 5 years.

Yet still managed a Champs league final and a very respectable 3,2,3,4, 6 in the prem while building a mega stadium.

Im not saying we should be competing with them but they are not a good example of we are crap accept it.

We’ve done a lot better over the last few years than other clubs who most would consider are bigger than Saints
Villa
Sheff Wed
Leeds
Sunderland
Derby
Forest
Newcastle
West Brom
Wolves until recently

And been on a par with the likes of West Ham. It’s only Leicester in our bracket who have really dented the big clubs dominance

Danny Ings is taking the piss and unfortunately we dont have other goalscorers to drop him. Deliberately running down his contract for his and agents financial greed. Such is his injury record though i dont know if anyone would be interested. Its laughable to suggest Man CIty like the media have suggested. I dont know what the bindipper sell on percentage was but the way its going i cant see us getting anything more than £15M tops.
