| Hasenhuttl V Gerrard 08:48 - Aug 9 with 814 views | SaintNick | Interesting to compare the two, Gerrard arrived back in November and since then has spent £80 million, yet only finished 1 place ahead of Saints last season Robin Olsen is 32. Philippe Coutinho is 30. Diego Carlos and Lucas Digne are 29. Calum Chambers is 27. Boubacar Kamara is the exception to the rule at 22 as Gerrard has sought to pack his squad with high-earning experience, as if he thinks he might have somewhere else to be in three or four years. So Villa have signed the experience that we crave, yet it hasn't got them any higher and in terms of expectations a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth is far worse for them than our 4-1 at Tottenham is. Be careful what you wish for | |

You could say exactly the same about Ralph, if you had said when he arrived in December 2018 that in 3 1/2 years time we would still be in the Premier League and also reached an FA Cup semi final then you would have bitten his hand off, given the performances. Its not just about where you are when you arrive, its about where you are when you leave.

Is that a song? I don’t know why you keep harping on about FA Cup semi-finals and quarter-finals, given that we make so little attempt to actually win these games. One could argue that Gerrard left a Rangers team in good enough shape that they were a penalty shoot-out away from winning major silverware in Europe.

If you give me odds based on what they have spent and what we have then I might consider it. Lets be blunt if you are rich enough to own a football club then unless you are from Dubai or Saudi Arabia you want a return on your money. Since the the summer of 2021 Villa have spent around £170 million. We have spent around half that, which is actually surprising as most on here will claim we don't spend money, but we seem to now. The point is that despite all that spending Villa are in no better position than us, if they finish just one place above us this season and have spent around £90 million more to do it that is not very good business. Thats football these days, fans scream for big transfer fees to be spent, but few clubs actually get a return on it and few clubs have an owner who can afford to spent £170 million and finish in 14th place

"Lets be blunt if you are rich enough to own a football club then unless you are from Dubai or Saudi Arabia you want a return on your money." This is not true. There are still traditional owners, like Tony Bloom at Brighton, whose only interest is success for the team they support. Football clubs have always been a rich man's play thing. In the past, owners were local businessmen, like Jack Walker at Blackburn, who wanted to put siomething back into the community.. Nowadays, they are more likely to be foreign billionaires who compete against each other for trophies, like they do in horseracing, without any real desire or need to make money out of it. The arrival of chancers who think they are going to make a quick buck out of a football club, is a relatively new phenomenon. [Post edited 9 Aug 2022 9:36]

The club can tell you they want you to build for the future etc etc but if you go on a bad run and the fans turn then as the manager you are going to get fired. The clubs owners want you to plan for the future, but as a manager can you really afford to do that. If we don't sort out the striking and defending issues and we struggle over the next 5 or 6 games then I think Ralph will find himself on very thin ice. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I've heard many people express the theory that Ralph would not be averse to getting fired, as he's already stated publicly that he wants to finish being a football manager at the end of his current contract. Like many before him, he's finding the stress quite hard to take. I'm not sure that if he were paid off now, he'd be too upset.

He knows he’s never going to get a bigger job than us now so I expect the multi millionaire will enjoy his retirement.
