Where are these prospects ?
Once we had an Academy that was recognized as one of the best in the Country.
We could do with its help regarding a Striker at this moment..

Our Academy won the Southern Section of the PL Academy league last season, losing to Man City in the final.

It's a shame that the owner's approach isn't the same of Markus/Cortese which was to aim to have around 50% of the starting lineup from the Academy.

The new lot just want to buy kids from other clubs. How's that working so far?

A couple of kids currently in L2.
Fandabedozie and The Dwarf
a keeper who hasn't kept a clean sheet in 20 games

Thank goodness for Lavia (and the injured Tino although, tbf, he'll never be as good as the RB we already had).

One of the problems with having an academy in the south these days, is Chelsea and the tentacles they seem to have everywhere. Previously Saints have got players from outside of Southampton, Walcott, Bale, JWP, Shaw, Oxlade-Chamberlain. If these players came through these days, Chelsea would have picked them up by now. They literally have satellites academy/hubs all over the south picking up players literally under the shadows of SMS. Look at Simeu and the lad who played for Germany last week.

Didn’t Brentford Jin their academy a few years ago because Chelsea and others were cherry picking their players?

I don’t think it’s anything Saints are doing particularly wrong, it’s just become a hell of a lot more ruthless.

Chelsea are like a super sized trawler picking up everything including the rubbish, I know some kids who play against my son that have been at Chelsea academy and they are average at best.

Beats me they don't put Dom Ballard on the bench, but no we carryon putting Walcott there.
Alan Shearer was only 17when he made his first full debut for Saints and guess what he scored a hat trick against Arsenal.

They have academies/hubs all over the country, Cornwall, Devon, Scotland, even Yorkshire where there are plenty of local clubs. They also deliver primary school programmes all over, waiting for that 8 year old kid with talent.

It’s nuts.

At the moment we have seen Dom Ballard break into the first team squad, also Diamond Edwards and Tyler Dibden realising quite quickly he was better off at St mary's

Thats three players on the verge of the firs team, thats not bad going in this day and age

Yeah your spot on there. As I myself used to officiate what’s almost a league below the EFL alience/U18 prem, called the national youth league, where you’d have these “backup” academies across the country for various teams.
As most EFL/Prem teams have multiple academy’s located across the UK (and for some the world), with most usually having just 1/2 based in two of north, central or south of the UK (with the one exception being where that club is located). Yet Chelsea have many more than that, and have many teams competing in many different leagues.

As the whole youth and scouting techniques have changed a lot since the past, with teams now having multiple academies dotted across the country and sometimes even the globe (as I’ve previously done a game for Inter Milan’s Eastern Asian team), meaning that all these big teams have soo many academies of their own players to choose from, meaning that if any of the main academies players start falling behind, they’ve already got loads to have a look at for replacing them, as well as giving those players they do drop a second chance with these “backup” academies. Also on top of that, because of how big their scouting networks are can quite easily notice talent and get hold of it.

But also the academies are becoming like the first teams with transfers, which is another major change. As in the past if you were ever in an EFL/Prem academy, whoever you started your journey with you’d almost always end up making the first team for, with the only real exception being those who were dropped, and it wouldn’t be until you started playing with the first team that all the bidding wars started when the transfer markets opened up. Yet these days loads of transfers go on from age groups of like U14s and above, as well as trying to lure players away with better deals and facilities (as I’m pretty sure Chelsea did that with a young saints max a while back, but in the end he decided to come back here), so it’s all just changed soo much and is the reason why soo many young prospects have been playing for like 3/4 different EFL/Prem academies before they even make the first teams.

So it’s just how times have changed that’s the reason why we’ve been struggling soo much, whilst many of these rich “top 6” teams have done soo well, as they’re the ones with academies in practically every country and if they ever do see opposition with future stars can always seem to get hold of them with all the money they have. So unfortunately the youth leagues and such are no different to the first team ones these days with the same teams dominating both with all the money they’ve got.

Yeah but they probably played for one of Chelsea”s “backup” academies like the local one they’ve got at Sparsholt, rather than the main one based in London, if they really are that average

Let’s see how long it takes (if ever) for them to make even the bench.
