| Do we need a defensive midfield player - who - and who makes way? 13:58 - Oct 17 with 1509 views | saint901 | I've seen a few games this season and having been thinking that we lack a defensive midfield player of sufficient quality. Early games this season his this well because we were on the front foot and that allowed the CBs to be quite advanced. Given the Salisu was not playing in those games, it seemed to work. Then we lost a couple and confidence drained away. Instead of looking forward and allowing JWP to play a pass to forwards, they all began hiding and he was forced to go sideways and backwards. (I'm aware that many here think that's what he does all the time but I disagree. He can only play the passes he has options for). That led to the midfield and CBs sitting deeper and invited the opposition into the space between half way line and defensive line. That is a decent system to play provided you have 1. a defensive midfield player willing to break up play and 2. your quicker forwards (AA) are prepared to not contribute to the defence and instead be the out ball. We had neither. AA was not played enough and Mara is on rails moving only in a 40x20 metre box centred on the opposition goal. But mainly we were then looking for Aribo, JWP, SA, Diallo or Ely to break up play. Only Diallo is a natural at that and he is a yard slow for the PL. Maitland Niles is not the answer either. I'm wondering if Lyanco is that man? Play a midfield of 4 in a diamond with Lyanco at the base, JWP/SA slightly wider and one of the others more forward, probably Aribo? Or perhaps we look into the Championship during the WC break to find somebody who can do that job. (I wonder what Wanyama is doing these days? Very cold in Canada in the winter?) | | | | |

If he was fit, I'd still be tempted to play him and Lyanco in away games (B'mouth) with JWP/SA ahead of them. Sort of a 4-2-2-2.

Except that's just not true. End 2021 and beginning 2022, ignoring cup results (two wins) 2 wins and 3 draws and JWP played in them all (and scored in some). I appreciate that once you've decided that a player is not good enough or not performing as they can at the peak of their game, then finding positives becomes difficult. By most of the statistical measures JWP remains top of the rankings for Saints and I only wish some others would match him.

Yes indeed Another example of Saints shifting players on without adequate replacements and then paying for it massively! Will we never learn?

Hate to say this but didn't he want to go back to Spain for a last bite at home and who could blame him? We've always said don't keep players against their will that want to go Yes, he loved the club etc, and has definitely been missed but ................ although you are right about replacement or did they think one of the new guys would fill that gap?

One of the new guys did fill the gap, Lavia until he did his hamstring. If the club had done what they said they would & get two players for each position then we wouldn't be missing Romeu or Lavia as much as we are. Because of injuries & suspensions one player for each position is never enough. Who have we got as cover for Che Adams, no one so just hope he doesn't get injured.

He sat in front of the back 4 and JWP was directly in front of him. Tbh I am starting to agree with I would about JWP, he really has offered very little this season.
