Jones got away with:

1. Playing Lyanco ahead of Wednesday’s man of the match KWP
2. Substituting Che Adams for Mara at 1-1; couldn’t see how we would score after that…..

Full marks to the team for digging in against a strong Palace team, but we conceded another poor goal and were in disarray for much of the first-half; Palace were totally on top for the first half-hour and could have been 3 or 4 ahead.

Support was half-decent at times.

A good day ultimately.

I think you are right he got away with Lyanco who in fairness had a decent enough game, I think he got a balance in the team between resting a few players like KWP & Lavia to make sure they were fi for the Everton game and the City cup tie.

Che Adams coming off was no surprise, we need him for another two games this week , Adam Armstrong stepped up to the plate well.

You are right we were in disarray for the first half hour or so, but there was a fight in the players themselves missing from most of the previous games, so that augers well.

You say that but Lyanco and Callta-Car were both great yesterday , and up until those last few minutes after NI brought on Diallo and Djenpo, palace really didn’t have many chances and didn’t look like scoring much at all.
And with Mara for Adams, we’ll I thought Mara did help to create a bit and didn’t actually play half bad, whilst Adams again was just invisible for most of the game and other than that phase of us having that high pressure on them, didn’t seem to do much at all

Caleta-Car didn’t exactly cover himself in glory for their goal.

A decent CB never lets that goal go in. And a decent goalkeeper, I should add.

A bit harsh on Caleta -Car, their man took a poor first touch that bounced off his knee and took the ball past Caleta-Car and put him in, keepers on one on ones have to gamble, sometimes they guess right, but in the main they are just hoping that they get the save in.

I think your report Nick is a fair and accurate one and reflects my feelings about yesterday.

Obviously pleased with the result, pleased that we showed some fight (as I did not see that against Brighton at all) and I don't want Nathan Jones to fail in the same way I did not want Ralph to fail, but equally I can't help thinking that I still felt that our football overall was poor, the goals were fortunate (but all teams need some luck sometimes) and thus far I did not see anything that suggests NJ was a good appointment. Everton is going to be critical in many ways, which is hard given our record there is not even good when we have been a "good" team.

But, we are in the next round and we have to grasp these little strands of hope and that hopefully it will grow into better days to come.

I thought Adam Armstrong's goal was very Danny Ings-ish yesterday. Goalkeeper nicely robbed & in the back of the net. Should give his confidence a boost. We probably won't see another goal from him now until late April/early May - but I can't fault his endeavour yesterday!

I actually thought there was a VAR case for hand ball it looked like it bounced up off his thigh and hits his forearm

Anyway Car was 5 yds too deep and played him on initially

Interesting reference to Ings.

I always thought that Ings was a bit special when running in to hassle a keeper with the ball.

Most players who do that subtlety slow down as they get very close to the keeper. Maybe it’s the natural reflex not to run straight into someone. Ings used to do the opposite. He would always hold a little speed in reserve and accelerate at the last minute. It took a lot of keepers by surprise.

I’m happy if Armstrong wants to channel a bit of ‘magic feet’.
