The chances of press ganging in skatesville must have been quite small after a while, as men would have legged it to safety pretty quick which is why the press roamed inland and to other ports (Southampton for example) to find them.

Interestingly (to me anyway) the remains of at least one of the hulls of that fleet can still be seen on the mud of the Hamble at low tide.
The sort of mud which the ‘skylarks’ in portsMyth harbour used to grovel around in looking for pennies tossed in from passengers on the Gosport ferry. I guess that’s what kids had to do in Portsea with no known parentage to look after them. Rashford would have been appalled. | |
