How can we stop conceding so many goals? 00:36 - Jul 22 with 718 viewsSaintsforeverj

Ralph has spoken of working on the defence and not conceding so many goals, over the pre season period. . Obviously that is a good thing and quite right that we need to stop conceding so many goals. But how will he do it? Although the attacking press is preferred by most of us, it could be blamed for us conceding so many goals.

Will we see a more defensive (Puel style Saints) next season?
Will we be less adventurous?
Or does Ralph just mean the defenders need to concentrate more, whilst we continue to be an attacking and pressing team?
New formation or perhaps set up more defensively against the better teams?
Will be interesting to see how we set up next season.

And we lack one solid consistently good CB, all ours are ok and Salisu is yet to prove himself as he hasn't had the chance
How we could have done with an Evans Cahill type

Those two are slow though. A bit more pace would be good. With full backs pushing up you need your CH’s to have pace as there is no cover for them. We don’t have a Walker type to retrieve situations.

Those situations quite often occurring when they eventually lose the ball in their own half passing square and/or back instead of pressing forward, and the keeper is immediately put under pressure, especially when Vestergaard's lack of pace finds him chasing opposing players who are already on the edge of,or in the box by the time he gets up to speed.
Seen it so many times last season - 1-0 up, drop deep, pass it back, pass it square, inevitably one goes astray and the opposition have the ball and are on a charge.
Not a great deal different from England v Italy. Instead of going for an essential second goal, they dropped back and invited pressure (from an average Italian side) with an inevitable goal and resultant heartache, when it really was the best chance of winning a title they'll not see again for a while.

The sideways backwards passing needs to become forwards and incisive

Quite simply buy the standard required for the League we're in and not hope to have players that will rise to the occasion, where else would you have a multi million pound business thats left to chance and speculation? Our centrebacks aren't good enough consistently enough and Stephens is no where near the required standard.

If our CB’s were quicker, we could push the play 20-30 yards higher up the pitch and condense more of the play to being near the halfway line.

We can talk about having better and quicker centre backs ofcourse, but remember the centre backs Puel had from the cup final onwards? We didn't concede many goals. Other teams like Burnley don't have the best centre backs but don't concede as many goals. Not advocating the boring style of play at all, but do we need to be more intelligent in some games? We have Ves, who was a Euro semi finalist and wanted by some top teams. We had Bertrand who has gone to Leicester. Are our defenders that bad? I'm not sure, but we have got what we have got and hopefully Ralph can find a way to tighten up.
