Reflecting on Ralph's tenure 19:55 - Nov 14 with 1792 viewsresearchersaint

Hi,

I've written the below article which looked back at Ralph's time in charge and also some of the reasons that he had to go when he did. I think once the dust settles most fans will be able to look back at periods of his time in charge with fondness but have a read and let me know what you think!

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

It seems a pretty balanced overview to me. It was never black and white with Ralph. I sincerely wish him well because he was a good appointment and he did some good things and we had some real highs but unfortunately we had some real lows and the last half of last season and the beginning of this is what did him in the end. I could no longer see him being able to turn it around. He had his chance and I feel no malice towards Ralph at all and I sincerely hope if he ever returns in any format that he gets a warm welcome and reception. His heart was always in the right place and he seems a decent guy. He wanted to succeed and he wanted to do it with us, but time ran out. Indeed in many clubs with the results he had he would never have lasted as long as he did. I believe the change should have been made at the end of last season. I wish him well and hope he goes on to better things.

I don't believe for one minute that Ralph's departure is the end of our problems as I am unclear where our current owners wish to take us and what their real intentions are. In fact, I am not sure I trust them but then I did not trust Gao either. I still think relegation is a more likely outcome and it will need something pretty special to turn it around. This season, thus far, apart from may be Wolves (and we lost to them in a terrible insipid performance by us) there are not 3 teams worse than us. But, we have to get behind Nathan Jones and support him and give him a chance. I like what he has said so far and he seems to recognise the issues and I feel he has a vested interest in the club with his family connections and gets it. You never know!

Good to see some balanced reporting on here about Hassenhutl.

For me the biggest criticism that can be levelled at him is the complete lack of progress in the time he was in charge. While it can be acknowledged that he was not given much money to spend, so many players simply failed to progress under his watch. And too many games were played with players who everyone could see were not up to it.

I think fans can handle losing a few games if the general trajectory is upwards/forwards. But every time there were signs of hope that the team was coming together into an effective unit, the hope was dashed and it was back to square one. Yes, injuries played a part along the way but ultimately the inability to build anything like a consistent team after four years in charge rests with Ralph.

Who knows how we will do under Jones but we were going absolutely nowhere under Ralph.

Poll: Would you welcome Oriol Romeu back?

Thanks, a good balanced summary of Ralph's time here.
The failure of the club to properly replace Danny Ings has killed us and probably did for Ralph.
If you don't have that clinical finisher and you're relying on Adam Armstrong there is no way you can continue playing high risk, high pressing football.
As A1079 says, we look like we're doomed this season as everyone else apart from Wolves just have the fighting spirit, or finisher that we lack.
Hope I'm wrong.

Thank you. Yes I agree about Ings. I love Adams but he misses too many great chances and needs a more clinical strike partner to take the burden off him. If we are to go down this season (for what it's worth I think we'll survive) the failure to sign a starting striker will be a huge part of that

Picking Walcott to start games this season was the last straw for me. I had only just started to think that he was never going to succeed, but that absolutely incensed me.

everybody knew even at everton knew he was finished at the top level and probably further down whoever gave him a 2 year contract should have been instantly dismissed for gross misconduct,in his final games he looked like someone who had won a competition to play for saints
