Lose the Jonah 20:41 - Mar 3 with 2598 viewsApex

When I last post some time ago I suggested that 4 4 2 was the best way for Saints to win and I was delighted to see them suddenly use this formation which worked well. I will like to make another suggestion to the manager that he will ignore at his peril, drop Adams to the bench because he has no pace or the right skills for the position of a Premiership striker. I know it's hard on the player who does his best but the harsh reality is by playing him as a striker we are in effect playing with ten players. We once played Sadio as a winger who could be seen back in the defence helping out - too much, Liverpool plays him up well upfront where his pace really matters. I was sad to see Shane Long who still has great pace treated badly by the club, we sure could use him now.
We will have a chance of avoiding the drop if this manager (who has clearly lost the plot) now drops Adams and plays a winger with pace up front with Ings. The two central forwards should also be told DO NOT drop back deeper than the centre circle for ninety minutes; let the other nine players in your team take care of the defence. Don't allow the opposing centre halves to drop back deep as sweepers like Van Dyke, The Saints need two central strikers who have pace to constantly push up and worry their defence, the opposition are not so keen to back off then.

Good post, but what would your team be?

Until KWP returns, I think the only reliable right back is JWP.

But then how do make up the front 6?

You say we are playing with 10 men with Adams. I frequently think the same about Djenepo. With injuries, there aren’t too many to choose from.

Interesting post. However, Redmond has been tried in that role, and despite his pace, remains almost completely ineffective with assists and goals. Djeneppo hasn't the pace. Walcott has played the role with very mixed results, tarting of well then slowly sinking to avergeness. Armstrong could probably do it, but is he good enough face to face with the defenders? Obafemi and Nlundulu seem to suffer from headless chicken syndrome, and I'm not sure if Tella can play that role. So what does that leave us?

Hi guys, In any football match at any level a manager knows he has to play his best available players, to play one slow striker upfront is inviting the opposition to spend most of the time playing in your half of the pitch, you cant leave a player with pace on the bench and play a plodder instead it's a foolish gamble to say the least and it has cost us.

You have to have to create real concern for their defenders like Ings with his power shots , and as Shane Long with great pace used to. My chose to partner Ings (against all opinions) would be Dejneppo, before you all say oh no let me point out a few facts. This guy is a sharp winger with pace and great ball playing skills and could if given a chance to play in a central position he could dare I say match Sadio. Yes Djeneppo is light weight and gets taken out by gorillas but think about it; would they want to risk a foul it in or around the penalty area with JWP smiling at them. There would be no point in naming my team selection because it would be just based on my theory and like fingerprints we all have different ones, Djeneppo in a central position with Danny in a 4 4 2 and we might just see a few wins again.

Come back Shane, all's forgiven.

For all that I haven'r rated Djenepo in most of the games I have seen him, he does appear to come to life when in or near the penalty area.

I don't think that he has yet proved that he is 'a sharp winger with pace and great ball playing skills' but I would be happy to try him upfront if it meant playing more solid players in midfield. And, yes, especially as Adams has gone off the ball.

My only final caveat is that Djenepo was given the chance of the game in the area against Everton and fluffed it completely. I would have backed Adams to score that!

Hi guys, with all the rumours that Ings, Vestiguard, Ward Prose and even Lamina are being targeted I get that old feeling that the vultures are circling again. Mr Hasent-a-clue-gal should get it into his head that some players just don't have the required pace and skill for the premiership. Logically speaking the best players who have a chance of a very lucrative offer with a bigger club are being pressed by their agents to avoid injuries, this means don't get injured and pull out of hard tackles; or if it does happens and you get hurt take a long time recuperating; if all else fails earn a red card.
Does anyone really think the two chances wasted by the sluggish Jonah in the Liverpool game would have been wasted by Danny Ings or Shane Long. If we keep playing with ten men against the remaining teams then as private Frazer would aptly say "We are doomed; aaay doomed ya ken. I suggested a 442 formation not 441.

I dont wish to be rude Mister Apex sir...
But have you actually seen Shane Long play football? He is literally famous for not being able to finish.
In fact, he's so bad, that even his biggest fans (which I assume are mostly family members) resort to defending him by saying that scoring goals is 'not his job' - despite the fact he is a striker.
So if you think bringing back 35 year old Shane Long back from the championship is the answer, then I can't take anything you've said seriously....

I think Apex has been playing too much Football Manager on the PS4 during lock-down...

I had completely missed this bit of foolishness. Is it a coincidence that another season ending in failure, east along the coast (no, not Brighton) has reinvigorated idiot posts on here?

Hi guys, yes Shane is 35 if he was 25 we could never have afforded him; but, he was and still is gifted with great pace that upsets defences. Had Shane Long been played properly and given a run in a 4 4 2 central role he would have scored more goals. You won't see that vital pace from the favoured Jonah who seems to just stroll about half the time and score very rare goals, he's just not good value for all the money we paid for him in my book. Shane Long was played as a wide midfield winger unless he was getting burnt out by being used as a lone striker by our inept manager Mr Hasn't a clue gal. Shane Long could even now beat most defenders to a through ball with his pace; however they could make a cup of tea waiting for the Jonah to catch up and challenge for it.
When Danny goes the Jonah is going to be our main striker, you couldn't make it up. I dreamed that he was targeted by Pompey, oh how I wish that it would come true.

I missed it too Berbs, but did you see what he did with Ralph’s surname? What a play on words! The man’s a comic genius (by Portsea standards...).

You're a joke fella.

Shane never went for more than 12m during his career, only scoring double figures once in the PL in 12 seasons. Good PL player granted, not great.

This season (including half a season of struggle) in his second PL season, Che's scored 9, Verner in a good Chelsea team has scored 6 and he cost about 4 times more than Che.
What do you want from a 15m player?

You're not the clown who thought a top 4 team would buy Redmond in the summer are you?

Che's a decent player, Ralph's a good manager, you really haven't a clue.

Hi guys , I am sure that Adams is a great guy and he does his best but the sad truth is he does not have the requisite pace for a premiership striker, he would probably score more goals providing he is given a striker who has real pace (like Shane Long had) as central partner in a 442 formation.

In my opinion the Saints should as a priority buy two strikers with great pace with strict instructions to never drop deeper than the centre circle, this will make the other side nervous about pushing up in numbers into our box.

Whenever the opposition manager sees that we are usually playing one slow striker they will exploit the situation and the word is out regarding Saint's weak attack, all anyone has to to win is attack us in numbers. It is a waste of time strengthening the defence and midfield if you continue to play one slow striker up front, it is a recipe for disaster , this is the reason why we are bottom . I hope the new manager sees this.
