A Ben Mee type 12:12 - Aug 13 with 1782 views | PatfromPoole | That’s what we need. I would personally throw money at Brentford and try and get him in. Would be quite the statement of intent. Oh, and Piroe would be good as well, might have mentioned that before 😉…….

| I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it. |

Chance to win a trophy as a captain maybe? One of those where if you sell the dream in the right way to the player, he could be tempted if he is a proper pro. I just fear we will go for a City or Chelsea youngster instead though.

A Ben Mee type on 13:59 - Aug 13 with 1652 views | Ifonly | We should get used to the idea of Bednarek and Stephens being our "experienced old heads". Buying 2 experienced CBs that are both good defenders and quality with their feet would require serious spend on grown adults and that goes against what SR stand for. Are JB and JS good enough? No, but we're stuck with them all the same. Hopefully we can paper over the cracks with some better coaching.
A Ben Mee type on 14:48 - Aug 13 with 1603 views | barry_sanchez | A better coach isn't going to help with anything, Villa slung Bednarek off as he was gash el pronto and Bournemouth offered shitter terms to Stephens to stay, they had had different coaches and they're simply shit and even Ferguson and Spalletti couldn't work wonders with such tripe, they're shit the end.

Good point about Bednarak. Emery is a great coach, but didn't attempt to coach Jan and make him better. He just got rid of him "Not good enough".

Defensive coaching isn't much to do with making the likes of JB better players. It's to do with being better defensively as a team. So it's a lot to do with how midfield players and full backs mark up, hand runners off, shift across, set pieces, communication from the goalkeeper etc. As I say, I don't rate JB and JS, but a good coach can always improve a team defensively.

Thing is Mee, Tarkowski along with Pope weren't good enough to keep Burnley in the Prem and Coady was deemed surplus to requirements at crappy Everton. Mee looks good because he's slotted into a winning, confident Brentford team that's actually got proper firepower up front.

True but I will bet any of those will have improved our defence nonetheless
A Ben Mee type on 08:04 - Aug 14 with 1204 views | SaintEPW | Tempting to blame back four when goals go in - however agree with comments that the issue lies more with the team structures and getting right fit of players- especially in midfield - given the increase in high press and attacking play. Our Manager wants to hold the ball and consistently look for ball to attack - which is great to watch and is leading to goals - where before we were struggling to score. However, that puts much more pressure and exposure on back four regardless of who they are. Stephens played well for Bournemouth who stayed up - he is intelligent, can bring the ball out and talks to other players. Bednarek is a highly aggressive marking CB. The bigger issue for current strategies are top quality midfield Holding players - great situational awareness, physical presence, able to play out under great pressure. Romeu is classic example ( left cheaply ) now at Barcelona. Prices for Caicedo and Lavia also show what's happening. We are loosing quality holding midfielders due to prices now being paid. Who do we have to do the job - we currently have some excellent attacking midfielders ?? Which full backs can play in our new system ??

Saints bought Charles from man city for 11mill in the summer. He is a holding midfielder. If he isn’t good enough right now , then that’s a lot of money sat on the bench
