Football was in decline perhaps due to the hooligan problem, it was certainly a dangerous time to be going to games, most away games you couldnt wear colours in the open outside the grounds, people were deserting the game in droves, unemployment wasn't helping either. | |

That Everton game was my first ever match. My 9th birthday treat. Alan Balls last game for us (he missed a pen). A beaten and bloodied Everton fan asked my mum if she'd like him to accompany us to the station on account of all the trouble. She told him where to go.
