| World Cup through the years 10:13 - Dec 14 with 349 views | Tonyfromdk | Reading about some posters on here going to the World Cup, you all have my upmost respect. I’ve never been to one but I remember watching my first one. It was in 1978 , all the tikka tape and Argentina winning against Holland The one I most enjoyed was in 1990. I still lived in England then and it was a great long hot summer. What was your first Word Cup and your favourite one ? Its not so much about England but what you had going on in your life at the time. | | | | |
| World Cup through the years on 10:53 - Dec 14 with 302 views | PatfromPoole | The first World Cup I went to was France in 1998. My first game was one I won't forget; England v Tunisia in Marseille. I suspect a fair few on here will know fellow Saints / Eastleigh fans Clive Foley and Pete Tait. We took my car on a ferry from Skatesmouth to Le Havre, and I drove Clive and Pete to Marseille, a heck of a drive. The game was on a Monday lunchtime. We arrived in Marseille on the Saturday afternoon, with no digs booked (don't think Skyscanner or Expedia were around in those days...) and just as general chaos was descending on Marseille, with 30,000 England fans there and a lively bunch of Algerians, Moroccans and Tunisians waiting for us. My first experience of tear gas, and being offered money by a tabloid photographer to lob a bottle at some north Africans at the old port (he was told to go forth). I remember it being quite big news back home at the time. One of the other guys we travelled with (not a Saints fan) rang his missus on the Sunday and she demanded he come home straight away. He obviously ignored her. The game almost seemed an irrelevance, but we won 2-0 on a pretty hot day in a great atmosphere. I got the England bug that weekend. Have since been to World Cups in Russia and Qatar. Not sure what I am doing next year, but strongly inclined to give it the swerve. [Post edited 14 Dec 10:57]

Great story Pat. How was it being together with fans from other clubs ? Being England fans you have a bond but still… The few games I saw at the old Wembley, I couldn’t get my head around it. Supporting your country whilst surrounded by fans you would normally think as complete wånkers

Ancient History Guy here again. The first WC I recall anything about was 1962 in Chile...won by Brazil. We as football mad schoolboys could only talk ( for weeks) about the Battle of Santiago between Chile and Italy. The match was described by David Coleman as " the most stupid, appalling, disgusting and disgraceful exhibition of football possibly in the history of the game "...come on Dave, stop soft soaping it. What did you really think. The first booking was timed at 35 seconds. First sending off was timed at 8 minutes...the Italian refused to leave the field until manhandled off by the Santiago Old Bill. While this was happening the Ref was distracted and didn't see the Chilean winger lamp the Italian full back, breaking his nose. When the game restarted an Italian attempted to exact retribution by kicking the winger in the head and was promptly sent off. There were no tackles recorded below mid-shin and several players were treated for testicular trauma. The amount of spitting would have made it a virus super spreader gathering today. The ref was England's Ken Aston who went on to head various committees in the FA and was widely credited with inventing the yellow/red card system later in life...he never reffed again after the Santiago match. Old school that game...jumpers for goalposts ..so old that you need Pathe News for the highlights.

Talking of complete anchors, I went to an England game at SMS quite a few years ago (can't remember opponents) and there was a skate sat quite near to us. How do I know he was a skate? He wore his club colours - at an England game ffs, just to let us know where he was from with a "look at me" attitude. To55er

I was in a group of 6 Saints fans in Berlin last year for the Euros final. The day before the game, we were sat in a bar next to a group of 8 or 9 Skates fans at the next table. All was amicable. I suspect for England home games it would be quite a bit less friendly.

Only world cups I’ve been to (one in Spain 1982, three in Italy 1990), and Euros in Sweden 1992, France 2016, England 2021 and Germany 2024) Although I didn’t get to see England play, in Euros in Germany only got tickets to for Spain v Italy But whilst there spent one day in Cologne, which was of Jocks, 4 of us Saints fans sat down next to a load of non Scots at a bar, 10 lads in table to right of us from Bristol (one Rovers, 9 City fans), on table to our left 10 Pompey fans (although one from Hedge End had a girlfriend who was Saints season ticket holder) Had great crack with all of them, as Pat says a generally no hassle with other England fans when abroad it’s more all in it together attitude, and really amicable.
| World Cup through the years on 19:59 - Dec 14 with 87 views | kernow | Never been to any. Grainy, black and white telly images of 1966 are the earliest recollections. Memorable matches involved England against Portugal, Argentina and West Germany in the final. North Korea 3 Portugal 5, at Goodison Park was memorable. The crowd reaction to the goals was unbelievable, you would have thought the Koreans were playing at home. A fanatical, football loving crowd. | | | |
