Anyone know what the figure was / is at the first juncture or 'tranche' ?
Often wondered, aside from whatever is needed to cover away fan allocations, is there a limit to what clubs can sell / have on the books as Season Ticket holders? In other words, if we hypothetically have 3,000 max for away fans, can the club sell circa 29,000 to Season Ticket holders if numbers were there (meaning no one can get day tickets). I know the answer will be no, but what is the reasoning aside from 'daytripper' tickets being sold at a premium / increasing gate revenues? [Post edited 4 Jul 15:07]

I seem to remember Charlton selling their whole ground to season ticket holders, apart from the away section when they got promoted to the PL, but they later worked out that they then alienated a few thousand fans who couldn't watch them at all during the season, so some went elsewhere and they lost those supporters.
As far as I am aware, clubs can sell their tickets how they like, so we could sell 29k season tickets but from what iv'e read and from the Charlton example, it doesn't make business sense to stop others from getting tickets. There would be no incentive for people to buy a membership card for example. If non season ticket holders couldn't watch the team all season, they might go elsewhere. Clubs choose to have at least a couple of thousand available for each game, to keep non season tickets holders interested and attached to the club. Day trippers might come to one game, and then be supporters for life, and you wouldn't want to block off new future fans by not having any seats available for some games. [Post edited 4 Jul 15:31]

Premier League has a maximum percentage rule, about 70-80 I think.

I don’t think there are any set rules about how many season tickets a club sells. That would be down to the individual clubs themselves.
Most clubs would rather not sell season tickets at all if they could get away with it as they get more from selling tickets on a match by match basis.
My season ticket was £597 or just under £26 a game. If a brought my ticket individually it would probably work out over £30 a game on average or around £690 over a season . So the club gets more money selling individual tickets. | |

But if you had a higher proportion of fans paying on a "pay as you go" basis, the crowds could be more variable.
If we were in a situation where the last 3 or 4 home games had very little riding on them (hopefully a very unlikely scenario....) the attendances could be really quite low for them,
At least with season tickets, the club know they have had our money, and don't have to go all-out on a marketing push to try to fill the ground.
There is of course also the cashflow issue, which Nick has alluded to in the past.
It's an expensive time of year for the Club, with "loyalty bonuses" (grimace....) paid to existing players and signing-on fees payable to new signings and players signing new contracts. |  |

Hence my comment “ if they could get away with it”
Certainly clubs like Nick Liverpool or man Utd would make more money , but like you say for saints it would be more of a gamble.
I think Hull stopped selling Season tickets a few seasons ago instead made fans pay a direct debit to pay for tickets ( or something like that anyway) I know their fans kicked up a stink about it and I think it only lasted a season before they started selling season tickets again. | |
