I don’t have any tats, I don’t mind them on arms and in other places where they can be covered, but I really dislike them on hands, neck and face.

Some police arrest here!

That’s because they are trying to restrain and cuff him using reasonable force, no doubt they’re all pulling in different directions etc. Doing things with the minimum amount of force is much harder than decking someone.
A mate of mine was a cop in the old days, he’s a monster and he’d have just decked this guy with one punch, but these days you just can’t do that.

Who do you want to come down ?

I’d prefer to see Forest come back down and Luton stay up because it’s a case of the underdog sticking it to the “big boys” in addition Forest could find themselves in a position where they need to rebuild after cutting costs to meet FFP rules if they’ve previously spent a shed full, whereas I’d imagine Luton have been run frugally on the basis they’d be coming back down, so they may be able to retain a significant proportion of their squad.

We haven’t had any power cuts yet, but there are a number of reports in existence highlighting the future threat to supply due to a lack of generating capacity. As a country we’re falling behind the curve, the last big coal power station which is retained as a back up in times of exceptional demand is being decommissioned later this year, we can’t connect renewable sites to the grid, Hinckley C is behind schedule. We need a more coordinated long term approach which isn’t purely dependent on market forces.

Braverman has now come out swinging for Sunak who has to “own” the Conservative party’s local election defeats!!! Is she real? I’m no Sunak fan, but this goes back before Sunak who is no blockhead. He has a much better knowledge of economic issues than his peers and he warned people what would happen if Truss became leader and implemented her economic plans and the rest is history!!!

The rot started long before Sunak took the reins, it started under Boris with his parties and his lies, then the Trusster and her economic debacle and now Sunak. On top of this we’ve had a cabal of incompetent oafish ministers at all levels and MP’s who’ve been sanctioned for conduct issues. Public services have taken a hit and our standard of living has deteriorated - something a lot of people won’t forget.

A huge majority thrown away with petty infighting, back stabbing and chasing their own agendas instead of putting country first. We're the ones disappointed.

Because the government have mandated it so that they can disenfranchise a significant proportion of society who may be inclined to vote against them as per JRM’s comments earlier in the thread.

Around 1/3 of eligible persons in the U.K. don’t have driving licences, around 25% of U.K. adults don’t have a passport, which when you consider the numbers actually equates to around 8m adults or a lot of voters.

My mother’s driving days are well behind her as are her vacations abroad, she doesn’t have either and there are quite a few in the same boat. .

But it’s not a level playing field when it comes to producing the ID, a 60+ plus Oyster card with picture is acceptable, but the 18+ card for students isn’t accepted. A 60plus bus pass is acceptable, a young persons railcard which could be used to gain access to a night club, buy a vape, etc isn’t acceptable neither is a University Student ID card. The rules as they are have been introduced to disenfranchise some elements of society. Down our way, most youngsters have a driving licence as they need it to get about, in places like London lots of youngsters don’t need a driving licence because they’ve got great public transport, over and above that they probably couldn’t afford to learn to drive and run a car.

Agree with your point about most youngsters not being bothered to vote.

Most European countries also have national identity cards which people can produce as and when required including to vote, we don’t have a national identity card here in the U.K. which alerts the dynamic.

Care home fees
at 21:52 2 May 2024

I think it depends on the circumstances and who’s delivering the care. I’ve got a relative who was very recently diagnosed with an advanced terminal illness, they’ve been discharged from hospital and have returned home on a palliative care package, the carers are NHS community based staff, they call 3 times a day and the NHS are picking up the tab. If circumstances were different and it was local authority or private care then I suspect the individual would pick up the bill.

I’d like to say that’s unbelievable, but sadly it isn’t. Johnson is a shambles and to think he was our Prime Minister. Mental.

The legislation will disenfranchise thousands of voters.

I’ve no time for Blair.

You mention the 3 million who’ve come in - a significant proportion of whom would have come here under the EU freedom of movement rules which were incorporated in to the Treaty of Maastricht signed by Conservative ministers Douglas Hurd and Francis Maude.

It’s 17 years since Blair finished as PM and 14 since Labour left power. What have our current government (and its previous incarnations under Cameron, May, Johnson and Truss) done about it? We’ve had Brexit, but since we’ve taken control back immigration has increased to records we’ve never seen before. If you look at the figures, EU nationals have been leaving the U.K. and during the year ending June 2023 the largest contingents of immigrants were India (253,000) Nigeria (141,000) China (89,000) Pakistan (55,000) and Ukraine (35,000).

As I’ve said I’ve no time for Blair, but let’s not blame the guy when others are equally or more responsible.

Ipswich
at 15:15 2 May 2024

That depends who goes up with Leicester. As things stand the 4 teams in the play off places are all getting parachute payments, but West Brom are in their last season of getting it.

If Ipswich and West Brom go up, then according to my calculations there’ll be 7 teams getting the payments next year namely, the 3 coming down this season, Watford plus Leeds, Southampton and Norwich.

If Leeds go up in the auto spot and Southampton or Norwich get the play off place then it will be down to 5.

7 teams on parachute payments would make life very difficult for the other 17 teams.

A significant proportion of the immigration during the Blair years was linked to freedom of movement courtesy of the Treaty of Maastricht, when the EU expanded in 2004, Britain (Blair) made the mistake of underestimating the number of people who would come to the U.K. and failed to apply restrictions to limit numbers - freedom of movement was the catalyst to the surging immigration numbers.
Reference to working both ways was the ability of British citizens to work from and move abroad, or retire abroad.

It’s been a deliberate policy of the current government and its Conservative predecessors to increase immigration. Just look at the net increase in population over the past 14 years - for 11 of the past 14 years it’s been higher under the Conservatives than it was under Labour, 1 of the 3 years was due to Covid and the other 2 years the difference was less than 5,000. Our population has increased by over 5 million in the last 14 years.

The last 2 years have seen the highest net immigration numbers ever - it’s undeniable.

The government push the argument for migration because it increases the working age population, is supposed to increase the tax take etc as we’ve got an aging population and more bills to pay address the skills gap etc. Others will argue immigration keeps wages down, erodes living standards etc.

Labour most certainly loosened the rules and allowed more people in, but immigration is now off the scale compared to what it was.

The very reason we’re in the mess we’re in is more attributable to the current government than anything that happened under Blair.
The changes to immigration law under Blair worked both ways, lots of Britons were able to move to live abroad while lots of Eastern Europeans made similar moves to come here and work, that said immigration under Blair was nowhere near the level we’ve seen under the conservatives between 2010 and 2024, last year we had a 1.25m new arrivals in the UK.

It’s not just steel, the manufacturing of lots of different products is now concentrated in China. Our businesses are developing products and they are all being built in China, our reliance on the far east is enormous.

You are right about the immigration numbers they are huge. Governments have allowed the population of the U.K. to increase significantly over the last 20 years, initially there was an influx from Eastern Europe when we were in the EU which governments and employers liked for different reasons, but more latterly over the last 3 years legal and illegal immigration has rocketed. Some parts of the government are still advocating increased levels of immigration because it benefits the economy and public services, NHS etc.

While there are benefits to immigration, there are downsides too and we are seeing that in terms of the lack of affordable housing, whether that is social housing or private housing - it’s mental that the average house is around 9 times the average wage. We don’t have enough doctors, we’re not building hospitals , we’ve got one of the lowest number of bed to patient ratios in the developed world , we’re not building houses, not investing in our infrastructure, water, sewers, power generation etc etc.

Immigration is also masking another major issue - we’ve got a lot of people who don’t want to work and that really needs addressing. Benefits should be a safety net not a life style choice, but addressing this is a difficult one. If you cut benefits, there’s a risk of pushing people in to poverty, but how do you incentives work without cutting benefits? I spoke to a lady this week, she was 79 and it was clear she knew her way around the benefits system and how to get round things, I was astounded.

In terms of children and the birth rate, it’s defo falling across many socio economic groups because quite simply people can’t afford kids. When houses are 9x the average salary and child care is so expensive, people can’t afford many kids. Fairly recently a couple of conservative MP’s drew attention to the falling birth rate and suggested axing the cap on family allowance and a few other measures because they can see what’s happening, but I don’t think anything came of it. The only people I know having multiple kids are the chavmungous, the NEETs etc who don’t give two hoots, drag up their kids etc etc- they are the very people we don’t want having masses of kids as they are likely to be the clients of the Courts, social services etc etc in the future.
